You may have seen the large vacuum trucks outside of your neighbours home. They’re the ones that make a lot of noise and blow and suck out all the dust, mice, books, toys, adult movies, paper clips, and more out of the duct system. We’ve found just about everything you can imagine as we’ve been duct cleaning in Toronto, York Region and the rest of the GTA for over 30 years. Cleaning out ducts is reminiscent of when they cut open that shark in jaws and found all kinds of stuff, including a license plate.

You might think is duct cleaning in Toronto necessary? We don’t live in a desert where it’s super dusty and we keep our house very clean.

The truth is the dust and other debris doesn’t have anything to do with the amount you clean your home. Your ducts might have been filled with dust and other debris by the previous owners of your home. If you have a new home your ducts might be and are likely filled with construction dust and other construction materials.

The amount of dust in your ducts doesn’t exclusively depend on the amount of cleaning you do in your home, but also the area you live in. There are lots of train tracks and traffic in Toronto, which are constantly throwing up dust into the atmosphere. These particles make their way into everything, even your duct system. So does duct cleaning in Toronto make sense? Yes.

Duct Cleaning in Toronto is Worth It

There are two times of the year when it’s best to have your ducts cleaned. In the Spring prior to using your central air conditioner all summer long, or right now in the fall. The fall is actually the ideal time to have your ducts cleaned as you will be sealing up your home for the winter and running your furnace to keep your family warm.

Duct cleaning in Toronto prior to the winter ensures that your furnace has as little resistance as possible when pushing warm air throughout your home. You will also benefit from cleaner air in your home as all the dust, pollen and other debris won’t be forced out into the rooms in your home.

Reputable Duct Cleaning in Toronto

Some companies that offer duct cleaning in Toronto and the GTA are very pushy and try to hard sell people on their services. They might use pushy telemarketing and extremely low prices to try to persuade you to book with them on the spot. The reality of finding a company that does duct cleaning in Toronto is that they are plentiful and making a quick decision isn’t in your best interests.

Some companies will do very poor jobs and merely vacuum out your registers for a smaller fee. You’ll think you got a premier service at a great rate, but realistically only the ends of your ducts have been cleaned.

Here are some things to look for when you want to find a company to do duct cleaning in Toronto:

  • Are they properly licensed?
  • Do they have insurance?
  • Do they have a code of ethics?
  • Do they have a number of reputable references?
  • Do they have positive reviews online?

There are lots of companies that need to be avoided, otherwise you might end up paying for thorough duct cleaning in Toronto and not get what you paid for. An inexperienced company can also use the proper equipment improperly and do permanent damage to your duct system, which can cost you thousands of dollars to repair.

We typically recommend having a furnace inspection at the same time as your duct cleaning so you can go into winter with the peace of mind knowing that your heating system won’t let you down.

For more information about duct cleaning, furnace maintenance or to find reputable duct cleaning in Toronto contact Novel Care today. We’ve been serving Toronto and the GTA for over 30 years and have built a stellar reputation for great services and great customer service. Google us to learn more or call: 416-921-0000.

If you’re a homeowner you understand how expensive it can be to own and operate a home. It’s important to do everything you can to ensure that your home and all of its parts last for many years to come, especially expensive things like your furnace. One thing many people don’t realize is that while they’re trying to improve their home with renovations they can be doing damage to their furnace at the same time. Luckily, avoiding furnace repairs that can be caused by renovations isn’t as hard as you might think.

Avoiding Furnace Repairs is Easy

The major culprit that can cause furnace damage when renovating is dust. Drywall dust and dust from other cut materials can be very fine and infiltrate your furnace and lead to permanent damage. Think of your furnace as a pair of lungs and what breathing in and out all that dust would be like. It makes it work harder and ultimately can cause damage.

One of the best ways in avoiding furnace repairs when renovating is to close off all the registers on the floor and in the area where you’re renovating. This prevents dust from entering your duct system and lingering in your ductwork.

Turning off your HVAC system and blocking your intake is also advisable so duct can be drawn into your furnace and duct system, clog up your furnace and spread throughout your home.

When you have cutting to do, try not to do it in your home. Instead choose a place in the yard or on a deck where the dust can disperse outdoors. It’s also a good idea to try to vacuum as much as possible during your renovation, so you can combat the dust as much as possible so it doesn’t infiltrate your HVAC system.

Finally, change your furnace filter. We say this all the time in our blogs, but changing your furnace filter, especially during a renovation, is very important. Your furnace filter should capture most of the dust that’s floating throughout your home, but this means it can be clogged up quickly during a renovation. Checking it regularly to ensure proper airflow is important, and overall changing the air filter is a fairly inexpensive thing to do.

For more information about avoiding furnace repairs cause by dust from a renovation or to book a furnace maintenance appointment contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000. Novel Care has been providing services in Toronto, York Region and the rest of the GTA for over 30 years.

There’s a lot more to a furnace inspection than just turning on your furnace and changing the furnace filter. There are actually quite a few steps involved, which are important to ensure your furnace is running cleanly and efficiently all winter long. The worst case scenario of not properly taking care of your furnace is that it will stop running while you’re away on your winter vacation, and the pipes in your house freezes. Frozen pipes typically burst, and replacing a bunch of burst pipes is incredibly expensive.

The easiest way to prevent this from happening is to keep your furnace running well all winter long. A furnace inspection is like an oil change to a car. You don’t absolutely have to do it, but you know it’ll keep your car running well and reduce the amount you have to spend on repairs in the future.

So what should you expect when you schedule a furnace inspection? Here are some of the typical services that should be performed during a furnace inspection.

  • The blower motor, wheel and housing will all be inspected and properly cleaned.
  • Some older furnaces need lubrication to the blower motor, and when doing so the belt will be checked for fraying.
  • The combustion blower will be inspected for obstructions, lint and other debris, and cleaned.
  • Your furnace will be inspected thoroughly for gas leaks.
  • Condensate lines, pan and drain will be inspected.
  • The evaporator coil will be check for proper functioning.
  • The burner will be inspected and cleaned if applicable.
  • All safety controls and the ignition will be thoroughly inspected.
  • The heat exchanger and heat elements will be inspected if applicable.
  • Where applicable, the flue will be inspected for holes and corrosion.
  • All electrical components and connections will be inspected.
  • The air filter will be replaced.
  • The duct system will be inspected for holes and cleanliness.
  • The startup system will be inspected for errors.
  • Unusual sounds and smells will be investigated.
  • Air conditioners and heat pumps will be inspected while the HVAC system is running.
  • The temperature will be measured and checked.

These and many additional things will be looked at depending on the brand and model of your furnace. Inspections differ between oil and gas furnaces, but an experienced technician should be able to take care of both types of furnace inspections.

For more information about your next furnace inspection or to schedule an appointment contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all of our appliances lasted forever and worked perfectly all the time. We would save so much money and time fixing them. Unfortunately, this will never happen as all appliances are machines. Over time all machines break down, it’s that simple. Air conditioners are no different, which is why from time to time we experience air conditioner problems. Fortunately, some of our air conditioner problems are easy to understand, identify and even fix.

5 Common Air Conditioner Problems

  1. Cleanliness: It’s been a long time since you cleaned your air conditioner and now something is wrong with it. Air conditioning units needs to be cleaned fairly regularly, especially since they sit outside and are privy to all nature has to throw at them. Filters should be replaced regularly, evaporator and condenser coils should be cleaned at least once a year, and wiping down your air conditioner components is also helpful to maintain efficiency.
  2. Leaking Refrigerant: Refrigerant is the fluid inside your air conditioner that keeps things cold. If you find that you’re constantly adjusting the temperature slightly colder, there’s a good chance you have a leak. Refrigerant isn’t the safest liquid on the planet, so it’s probably best to call a professional HVAC technician from a company like Novel Care to take care of fixing it.
  3. Poor Drainage: Drainage issues are quite often the result of loose pipe connections or clogs. These clogs can result in water backing up into your unit and your house, which can cause expensive water damage if it’s not noticed quickly.
  4. Worn Out Controls or Sensors: Just like other electronics that get used all the time, these components can wear out and need replacing. Corrosion at terminals and on wires can cause issues for your system, so be sure to point out anything you see during service calls.
  5. Flipping A Switch: Lots of air conditioners have an option where the unit is connected to and indoor wall switch, for safety and ease of use. As the homeowner you know what that switch does, but not all of the visitors to your home know. This switch could have been accidentally flipped and turned your unit off.

Take a look at these things when you notice any air conditioner problems. For more information or to schedule a service appointment contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

The unofficial end of summer is September, which is why we’re calling it fall furnace maintenance now. Don’t worry, we’re not declaring the end of summer yet, we’re just trying to help you prepare for the impending winter. Late August and September are the best times for fall furnace maintenance because professional furnace maintenance and repair companies like Novel Care can easily schedule your fall furnace maintenance well in advance of the first snowfall.

The Importance of Fall Furnace Maintenance

Without an annual furnace check-up your furnace might not last as long as you want it to. Your system can wear itself down and different components can easily break down if they’re not properly maintained. One of the worst things that can happen is your furnace can accidentally release deadly carbon monoxide into your home, which is also why our technicians always ask if there’s a carbon monoxide detector in the house.

The typical life of a furnace is around 20 years, and with proper maintenance and repairs your furnace should last that long if not longer. As all furnaces age their efficiency drops, so if you have an older furnace it’s important to talk to your HVAC technician when it makes sense to replace it for a new high-efficiency furnace.

High-efficiency furnace have the ability to save you a lot of money each month and over the life of your furnace. Replacing your furnace is a matter of functionality and what your household budget can absorb at the time. In the long-term and new efficient furnace makes the most sense, but talk to your Novel Care technician for the best advice.

It’s not common knowledge, but only 17% of homes in the world have air conditioning. Fortunately, this statistic is going to change, soon, and vary drastically. By the end of the century, within the next 84 years, the number of homes that have air conditioning will rise to about 70%. This isn’t anticipating any radial factors but based on the growing demand of the global middle-class population.

The main way this will be achieved is through technology and the thought that merely cooling an individual’s personal space is much more affordable than an entire building. Consider things like office chairs that provide cooling, or shoes that keep individuals cool as they walk.

Technological Advances In Air Conditioning

It’s difficult to predict exactly, but the amount of energy that even the most efficient air conditioner models consume is a lot for some countries to digest. The United States Government is known for a lot of things, but the DELTA program isn’t one of their more popular ones. DELTA stands for Delivering Efficient Local Thermal Amenities.

For example, they’ve developed a prototype in RoCo, the robotic personal conditioning device. RoCo has a heater and air conditioner attached to a moving base that follows you around through the signal on your smartphone. RoCo will gently blow the warm or cool air at your to help regulate your temperature. In a commercial building, up to 30 percent of energy costs could be saved, especially if RoCo is charged using solar technology.

DELTA has also come up with a wireless powered climate-controlled office chair. It uses only 14 watts to providing heating for its user and 4 watts for cooling. It has cooling and heating elements that are assisted by small fans, and when not in use the whole system powers down to save energy.

One of the most impressive technologies is the thermoregulation of shoes. DELTA calls this the ReBoot, which has thin insoles with water channels running through them. Working like an air conditioner the water absorbs the heat from your feet and disperses it through a small fan in the boot. This works because the feet are part of the body’s cooling system and give off a lot of heat. By making them more efficient the body will cool off faster.

These technologies aren’t currently available on the market, so while we all wait for our own personal cooling accessories we’ll continue to rely on high-efficiency central and ductless air conditioning systems.

Annual air conditioner maintenance is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your air conditioner is running properly and efficiently. Proper air conditioner maintenance is also one of the best ways to keep your air conditioner running longer, so replacement units are fewer and farther between. It’s a big mistake to forgo air conditioner maintenance, and here are 7 other mistakes you might be making when it comes to home cooling.

Air Conditioner Filters – Part of air conditioner maintenance is changing the filter, but it shouldn’t end there. The air conditioner and HVAC filter should be inspected and possibly changed at least once a month. Changing the air filter is easy and can improve the efficiency of your system immediately.

Programmable Thermostats – A programmable thermostat is one of the best ways to ensure your system is running as efficiently as possible. This reduces the wear and tear on your system and also ensures that you’re not paying high rates on your energy bill when you don’t need to. Smart thermostats make programming even easier as they understand your habits and adjust the temperature accordingly.

Incorrectly Setting A Thermostat – The human body can adapt to changing temperatures quite easily. If you’re setting your thermostat too low during the summer to keep your home and body temperature very low you might be wasting money. Every degree setting lower in the summer can increase your energy bill by up to 3%. Allow your body to adjust to higher temperatures so you can save money in the summer.

Fans – Ceiling fans are a great addition to air conditioning systems. They help circulate air throughout your home, so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard. Ensure that your fan is turning counterclockwise during the summer to assist with airflow.

Poorly Positioned Vents – It’s tough to choose where your vents are located in your home, but it’s important that they aren’t blocked by furniture or curtains. Obstructed vents aren’t able to properly cool your home or circulate the air. This makes your system work harder than it has to, which in turn costs you money.

Empty Rooms – It’s not always the best idea to close vents in your house as it affects the pressure of your home, but if you can put dampers on the pipes leading to empty rooms in your home and close them when they’re not in use you won’t be cooling empty rooms. When doing this it’s important to close the doors to those rooms so cold air is sucked into them.

Window Coverings – Sunlight is wonderful, but it’s also the biggest thing fighting your air conditioner. By coming through the windows and heating the air in your home, sunlight can be making your system work harder to keep your home cool. shades and blinds are the best defense against the sun when it’s shining through your windows.

When it comes to the efficiency of your home, your cooling and heating systems account for a lot of your energy bill. If you’re not sure if your system is running correctly you might be tempted to call an HVAC technician for air conditioning repair services. Ultimately, it’s the best way to get your system working properly, but first it’s important to find out if your system needs attention.

You may notice that your air conditioner isn’t cooling your home as quickly as it used to. You’ve put your hand over the vent or register and it’s hard to tell if the air is warmer than it was a month ago, or even last summer. One simple way to test if your air conditioner is running properly is to use a thermometer.

Use A Thermometer, Then Call For Air Conditioning Repair

The easiest way to find out if your air conditioner needs a tune up or air conditioning repair services is with this easy test. Turn on your air conditioner and leave it running for at least 15 minutes. Ensure that the temperature outside is above 80 degrees F, and that the air filter is clean. Next place a thermometer on the register that’s closest to the indoor cooling equipment and leave it there for at least 5 minutes. Next do the same on the return of intake vent that sucks air from your home to be cooled. The air that’s coming out of the furnace should be 15 – 20 degrees F cooler than the air that’s being sucked in. If the air that’s coming out is less than 15 degree F cooler than there might be a problem with your air conditioner.

Issues could range between low refrigerant, leaking refrigerant, a blockage, poor air circulation, and more.

Overall, this is a good way to tell if your air conditioner is operating as efficiently as possible. Low efficiency could mean you need air conditioning repair or maintenance services.

In case you haven’t noticed it’s exceptionally hot in Toronto these days. Toronto weather trends have been hot, and even with rain in the forecast there won’t be much relief. Sure it’s summer, but most people have noticed that this summer is turning out to be very hot and very dry. This combination can cause a number of problems for people with allergies and respiratory diseases.

The combination of hot and dry Toronto weather means that there is more matter floating in the air, which means there’s more matter floating in the air in your home. People with allergies to dust and other particles could find themselves having a late summer sneeze here and there.

For people with respiratory diseases this Toronto weather can be difficult to take. Breathing in hot heavy air can be challenging and with the risk of dehydration peaking it’s important to stay indoors and out of direct sunlight.

Relief From Toronto Weather

As HVAC professionals we know that one of the best ways to beat the hot dry Toronto weather is to ensure your air conditioner is working properly. Your air conditioner not only provides you and your family with cool and refreshing air, but it also filters the air in your home. This is one of the best ways to improve your indoor air quality.

With so much dust and other particles floating in the air the filter on your air conditioner and HVAC system will be working overtime. Be sure to check it at least once a month throughout the summer to ensure it’s not clogged, and is allowing proper airflow.

For more information about which air conditioners best suit your situation and can help you beat the Toronto weather this summer contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

Sitting in the shade on a hot day is a great way to stay cool. Well, the same goes for your air conditioner. Air conditioning efficiency is heavily impacted by the amount of heat and sun being placed on your air conditioner. If shaded by a tree for most of the day your cooling system won’t have to work as hard as it would if it were in direct sunlight. As a result, it’ll run more efficiently and you’ll save money on your energy bills.

If an air conditioner’s compressor or condenser sits in the hot sun it has to cool itself off as well as the air that it draws from inside the house. A cooler air conditioner will not only save you money, but it will have a longer life and require less maintenance over the years. On top of that adding greenery to your yard is always beneficial in terms of cooling your home and yard overall.

There are other options to keep the sun off your air conditioner. Sunshades and other elevated covers or awnings that are made specifically for air conditioners are also excellent, yet less natural, ways to keep your air conditioner cool.

Impeding Air Conditioning Efficiency

One thing to note when planting trees and other shrubs to shade your air conditioner is not to have them too close. Your air conditioner relies on the space and air surrounding it to work properly and efficiently. When the leaves of trees and bushes reduce the airflow around your air conditioner it has to work harder to move the air around it. Additionally, if a tree or bush is too close it can get scorched by the air conditioner, so keeping them at a safe distance is also in their best interest.

It’s also important to make sure that the trees or bushes you plant don’t drop lots of seeds, which can fall into your air conditioner and cause problems.

If you need a new air conditioner installed, maintenance on your existing one, or just want to learn more about air conditioning efficiency contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

A ductless air conditioner is a great retro-fit addition to houses that don’t have existing duct systems. Houses with radiant heating, space heaters, and baseboard electric heating don’t typically have ductwork, so there’s no easy way to incorporate central air conditioning.

Ductless air conditioner units are also great choices for rooms and additions where extending ductwork isn’t feasible. Overall, ductless air conditioner units are an excellent choice for a number of situations and are a great way to keep energy bills low and indoor comfort high.

Ductless Air Conditioner Main Advantages

Here are some of the main advantages of incorporating or installing a ductless air conditioner into your home or office space.

  • Size: They’re very small in size and as a result can be incorporated into just about any space and existing decor.
  • Flexibility: They can be used to suit small areas as well as large, and can be customized for spot cooling or entire floor cooling. Multiple units can be networked in order to further enhance your cooling efforts and provide flexibility to lots of different people.
  • Zone Cooling: Cooling different zones is an excellent way to keep specific areas different temperatures, and ensure that different people can adjust the cooling in their spaces to suit their preferences. This is done through the use of multiple thermostats.
  • Easy Installation: Installing a ductless air conditioner is easy and can be done in a single day. They consist of 2 main components, an exterior condenser, and an interior air handler. These units are connected by drilling a hole through an exterior wall and running a pipe with all the necessary components. Typically, these units should be no further than 50 feet away from each other, but exceptions can certainly be made to accommodate unique scenarios.
  • No Ductwork: Ductless air conditioner units don’t have any ductwork. That means there’s no energy loss through the ducts, there is no need for new construction to install new ducts. Duct systems can be responsible for up to 30% of a central air conditioner’s energy consumption through inefficiency.
  • Remote Controls: Ductless air conditioner systems are easier to operate than televisions, which ensures that anyone can properly configure and operate them.

Overall, ductless air conditioners are an excellent choice for spaces that have existing ductwork and spaces that don’t have any. They’re the perfect addition to any home or office environment, providing cool fresh air that increases the comfort of your space. You might also experience other benefits like increased efficiency and happiness due to your space being much more comfortable than it was before you installed ductless air conditioning.

Novel Care has been installing and maintaining ductless air conditioners in Toronto, York Region and the rest of the GTA for over 35 years.

Ductless air conditioner maintenance is just as important as the maintenance of any other machine in your home. Your furnace, central air conditioner and car all need regular maintenance to run efficiently and so does your ductless air conditioner. Ductless air conditioners have a reputation for reliability, and with advances in technology, they’re one of the most reliable cooling choices on the market.

Ductless air conditioners rarely have call-backs after installation and overall the systems are incredibly maintenance-friendly. Typically, ductless air conditioner maintenance consists of filter replacement, condenser coil cleaning, and sometimes flushing the pipes to ensure there are no blockages.

Ductless Air Conditioner Maintenance is Easy

We’ve said it many times, ductless unit maintenance is easy. The clean and simple design of these units fosters easy upkeep. This allows homeowners to do much of the maintenance themselves if they’re comfortable doing it. For this reason, ductless air conditioners have continuously grabbed more of the global air conditioning market share with advances such as:

  • The expansion of the available capacities up to 48,000 BTU
  • Longer pipe lengths that can reach up to 100 feet, and even in some cases a linear length of up to 230 feet
  • Greater height separation between the condenser and air handler, commonly 65 feet, but also in some instances up to 164 feet

Just about everywhere you look these days someone is telling you how hot it is outside and to find air conditioning. The weatherman is constantly proclaiming a heat warning, seniors are being told to stay indoors, and 60 sunscreen is flying off store shelves.

It might seem like the amount of advice you get during the summer is overwhelming, but everyone just has your best interests in mind. At Novel Care we do as well, which is why we’ve put together this shortlist of 3 ways that air conditioning is good for your health.

Air Conditioning is Healthy

  1. Dehydration: This might not be news to you, but in the summer you sweat. Sometimes you might not realize how much moisture your body is actually losing until you feel dizzy, get a headache or any other symptoms of dehydration. It can happen fast, so while drinking lots of water is an important part of keeping cool, ensuring you have easy access to air conditioning is essential. Your body can take time to hydrate, but by keeping your body cool you’re reducing the amount you sweat and your core temperature.
  2. Clean Air: Air conditioning is designed to do just that, “condition” the air. In doing so the air that’s circulated through your air conditioner is filtered. Pollen, dust, smells and other particles are removed and the air you’re now breathing is much cleaner and healthier.
  3. Humidity: Humidity might not be a big deal to you, but some people have difficulty breathing when humidity is high. Additionally, humidity is also a major contributor to mold growth. If mold is allowed to form in your home you’ll be breathing in mold spores, which can contribute to a number of respiratory issues.

Ductless air conditioning installation isn’t just for homes that don’t have ductwork. Some homes with existing ductwork might have rooms or areas with poor air circulation or temperature regulation. Ductless air conditioning installation is an excellent way to spot-cool specific areas or rooms in your home.

Running ductwork is an expensive, time-consuming, and messy process. It might seem like a good idea to just spread your existing ductwork throughout your home, so you don’t have to purchase new equipment, but there are better options.

Ductless Air Conditioning

Adding a ductless air conditioner to your home to support your existing central air conditioner isn’t uncommon. Many homes that have long hallways or additions that haven’t properly incorporated ductwork need additional cooling options. Ductless air conditioning installation is easy, clean, and fast. Most of all it’s much more affordable than ripping out walls, putting in new duct systems where you can, and then drywalling, patching and painting all over again.

A professional and reputable ductless air conditioning installation technician can have a unit installed in your home in less than a day.

Ductless Unit Are Ideal For…

Ductless air conditioning installation companies will help you choose a unit and a spot for your unit in your home. Many homeowners know there’s a problem, but they don’t know what to do. Professional HVAC technicians like the ones at Novel Care can help you with the entire process from beginning to end.

Ductless Air Conditioners are great in:

  • garages
  • additions
  • sunrooms
  • sheds
  • basements
  • hallways
  • stairways
  • and any other room or area that doesn’t have proper cooling or air circulation.

Ductless air conditioners are very quiet, even more than the quietest ceiling mounted fans, and they take up less space. They come with remote controls and when properly configured are incredibly energy-efficient. They’re also better than adding ductwork because ductwork can typically lose up to 30% of its cool air as it travels through your home.

Since the invention of air conditioning in 1902 by Willis Carrier there have been many leaps and bounds when it comes to cooling technology and ductless air installation.

Ductless air conditioners have changed quite a bit over the last 100 years as manufacturers continue to create advancements and better technology. As a result, the popularity of smart solutions like mini split air conditioner installation and other ductless products has skyrocketed.

Ductless Air Installation & Other Trends

Smarter Ductless Air Conditioners

As technology moves forward so does the intelligence of air conditioning products. Smart thermostats, monitoring, and other components are becoming the standard. Following ductless air installation, these pieces of technology ensure the efficiency and proper functionality of a unit. They have the ability to modify heating and cooling cycles depending on settings or their environment, and in turn, save you money.

Smart Thermostats

Smarter thermostats that can be part of your ductless AC installation package have lots of capabilities. They can be connected to smartphones, tablets, and computers using BlueTooth and wi-fi settings. This allows users to easily and accurately control their units, even while they’re not home.

Ductless Air Installation & Technology

Ductless mini-split air conditioners have come a long way since early units, and are now leading the pack in terms of energy efficiency. Ductless mini-split systems are set apart because they have a compressor that can connect to multiple indoor air handlers. These air handlers can be located in many different areas of the home and don’t require ductwork or other construction. Each ductless mini split installation comes with its own thermostat so specifying temperature throughout your home is easy. Cooling only the rooms you’re using also ensures great efficiency and saves you money.

Air Purifying

Poor indoor air quality can lead to lots of health issues and the last thing you want to do is expose your family to poor air quality. New ductless technology incorporates air-purifying into the mix. Now you’re also getting cleaner air in addition to cooler air. This eliminates the need to also purchase air purifying equipment.

As the first heatwave of summer is upon us you’ll be relying on your air conditioner to keep your family cool and comfortable. When temperatures rise into the high 20s and 30s your air conditioner and HVAC system have to work even harder to maintain your specific temperature setting.

Keeping your air conditioner and HVAC system in good working order is the best way to make sure it works when you need it to. There’s nothing worse than sitting through a heatwave while waiting for an HVAC professional to come and fix your air conditioner. Remember lots of people have air conditioners that break during heat waves so most HVAC companies, especially reputable ones like Novel Care, get booked up much quicker than they normally do.

4 Ways To Keep Your Air Conditioner Running

  1. Professional Air Conditioner Maintenance: In the spring, before summer is here, it’s important to have your air conditioner and HVAC system tuned up by a professional. It might not seem like a big deal, but it’s essential to have specific things done by a professional so your system is running as efficiently as possible. Some parts can be damaged if not cleaned properly, which is why a professional from a reputable company like Novel Care should be tasked with your air conditioner maintenance.
  2. Replace Your Air Filters: Your air conditioner and HVAC system might have one or more air filters that need to be changed or cleaned on a regular basis. This is one of the easiest things that you can do to maintain the efficiency of your HVAC system. Replacing the filter also helps to reduce the amount of dust, pollen, and other allergens in your home. Overall, a clean HVAC filter ensures that all the internal parts of your system are dust free and clean.
  3. Stop Tinkering With Your Thermostat: Find a comfortable temperature for your home and then leave your thermostat alone. Once you find that temperature it’s important to set it for times during the day when you’re actually home. When you’re not home set your thermostat to maintain a higher temperature so it uses less energy. A programmable thermostat should only be adjusted if your habits change and you find yourself home during an irregular time. Overall, once you set it the less you tamper with it means that your air conditioner and HVAC system will run more efficiently.
  4. Cover Your Windows: Blinds, shades, curtains, or any other type of window covering help keep the sun out during the day when it’s very hot. When the sun shines through a window it turns your home into a fishbowl and super-heats the air. As a result, your air conditioner has to work extra hard to cool your home. Planting trees and other foliage in your yard to block the sun can also help.

Your furnace is an important part of ensuring your home remains a comfortable and healthy environment. Furnace filters may not seem like a big part of that equation due to their simplicity, but in fact they are. One of the easiest ways to avoid problems with your furnace is to ensure that you change your furnace filter regularly.

An Overview of Furnace Filters

Every furnace has a filter, and if one doesn’t then it has some sort of other filtering system for the air that passes through it. Furnace filters ensure that dust, hair, and other airborne particles that are sucked in by your HVAC systems intake aren’t redistributed throughout your home via the vents. All air that gets sucked into your HVAC system passes through the furnace filter prior to being heated or cooled and sent back out into your home or office.

Types of Furnace Filters

There are three common types of furnace filters available and used in different furnace models. There are the cheap fibreglass furnace filters, pleated furnace filters, and reusable furnace filters. Each type of filter has its own pros and cons that can help homeowners decide which type is best for their purposes.

Fibreglass Furnace Filters

Fibreglass furnace filters are the cheapest filters on the market. They’re disposable and as a result typically need replacing more often than any other type of filter. At Novel Care we recommend replacing these types of furnace filters at least every 90 days or when you notice that they’re clogged and affecting the efficiency of your HVAC system. Fibreglass filters come in a variety of different sizes that can suit just about any furnace, but also have a lower filter rating.

Pleated Furnace Filters

These are the most common types of filters. They vary in price from between $12 to $50 depending on their size and quality. Pleated furnace filters are typically made from paper and polyester and should also be changed about every 90 days but can be left longer if the air quality isn’t bad or they aren’t clogged with dust. If you’re looking for a balance between cost and good quality air filtering these are the best option.

Reusable Furnace Filters

These are more expensive than fibreglass or pleated furnace filters and can last for many years with proper care and cleaning. They’re typically made from plastic and aluminum, and the filter itself can be washed and vacuumed when it’s time for cleaning. While these are the most expensive options they come in a wide range of prices depending on the filter ratings, but they’re generally accepted as the best filters on the market.

Understanding Filter Ratings

Furnace filters are rated on the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) scale. This scale ranges between 1 and 16 with 16 being the best rating possible.  Most filters that you would want in your home are rated between 8 and 11. If you have someone with respiratory issues or allergies then finding a filter with a rating higher than 11 or 12 is ideal. Filters with high ratings are also useful if someone in your home smokes as they are better at filtering the air of smoke and related smells.

You might be thinking that it makes sense to only purchase filters that are rated 16 because they’ll provide the best indoor air quality, which is true but the might the MERV rating the slower air passes through the filter. The downside to impeding the flow of air is that it can directly affect the efficiency of your HVAC system and slightly increase your energy bills. This is because your HVAC appliances have to work harder to force air through the filters and spread it throughout your home.

Overall, furnace filters are an important part of your HVAC system and ensuring that the indoor air quality of your home is at its best. Regardless of the filter that you choose it will eventually need to be replaced, so taking a look once a month to see if it needs cleaning or replacing is ideal. Regularly changing your furnace filter also ensure that the efficiency of your system isn’t compromised by a clogged filter.

Summer is officially here! You’ve got your lawnmower primed to groom a nice lawn, your gardens are coming together nicely with beautiful flowers and vegetables, and you’ve just realized that your air conditioner isn’t working properly. Your outdoor space is ready to be enjoyed, but without central air conditioning, there isn’t anywhere for you to escape the high temperatures and heat that assault Toronto and the GTA throughout the summer.

Years ago central air conditioning was a luxury as many homes in Toronto, York Region and other places in the GTA didn’t have the ductwork necessary to accommodate a central air conditioner. Installing ductwork is an expensive and invasive project as well and many homeowners simply weren’t prepared to put that amount of money into their homes for a luxury. As summers have slowly gotten hotter and many older homes have been renovated the number that has central air conditioning has skyrocketed. Few Toronto homes don’t have a central air conditioner and these homeowners now have the luxury of cool, evenly distributed air throughout their homes.

Aging Central Air Conditioning Systems

Central AC systems typically last for up to 20 years depending on how well they’re taken care of over the years, but at the end of the day they’re machines and like all machines, they require repairs, maintenance and eventually need replacing. Near the end of their lifespan, it can be difficult to know if a central air conditioning system should be repaired or replaced from a financial perspective. While an older model might be reliable and the repairs small, they can add up over time and eventually become very costly. A new energy-efficient model will be reliable as well and will almost certainly save you money on your energy bills, but they come with a larger initial cost than many homeowners might be prepared for.

So, should you keep sinking money into an older model or spring for a new energy-efficient model?

Warranties & Repairs

Most central air conditioning systems come with a warranty that covers certain components and some maintenance and repairs depending on the specifics of the warranty. Once a warranty has expired and you’re paying out-of-pocket for big repairs and maintenance it’s time to start thinking about replacing your central air conditioning unit. Basically, by comparing the replacement cost to the monthly cost of running your air conditioner you can gauge whether you should replace it now or wait another year. When inefficiency and the cost of repairs start to eclipse the cost of replacement or make a replacement seem viable then it’s probably time to pull the trigger on that shiny new efficient central air conditioning system you’ve had your eye on.

Rising Energy Bills

Over time you will notice that your energy bills will slowly increase as the efficiency of your air conditioning system decreases. At a certain point, this increase may become substantial and running your air conditioner can become more expensive than it’s worth. This is the point where you should contact a reputable and professional central air conditioning company like Novel Care to evaluate your air conditioner. They’ll be able to tell you if repairs or replacement make more sense in relation to your mounting energy bills.
