Temperatures in Toronto are finally beginning to level out and it looks like Spring is here to stay. Before you know it the heat of summer will be bearing down on us and you may wonder “why isn’t my air conditioner working?” Hopefully, most of us don’t wait until a heatwave hits to ask this question, but if you do there are a few simple reasons that might make it true.
With proper maintenance and care your air conditioner should run well effectively throughout the summer, but not every air conditioner issue is completely avoidable. One of the most common questions we get every spring when people turn their air conditioners on for the first time is Why isn’t my air conditioner working? Here are a few reasons why it might not be working the way it should be.
Check Your Thermostat
First of all, the batteries in your thermostat need to be changed at least once a year. There will typically always be enough juice in them to ensure the digital display is on, but your thermostat also needs to have enough power to send an activation signal to your furnace and air conditioner. If the batteries are dying, they might not have enough power to get that signal to your air conditioning unit.
If your air conditioner still isn’t turning on, then check the temperature settings to ensure that they haven’t been changed. Other family members might have adjusted the temperature to suit their preferences, and as a result, it might be warmer than you’re accustomed to.
Damage to Ductwork
If you have a central air conditioner, then your duct system is an essential part of it. Cracked, bent or ductwork with holes in it might be letting air escape into the walls of your home or other exposed areas in your basement. This can drastically reduce the amount of air that’s actually making it to your vents and out into your home.
It’s also a good idea to inspect your vents for blockages. If you had recent construction activities in your home and materials have fallen into vents or you have smaller family members who are prone to putting things down the vents then you might have a blockage that’s limiting airflow.
Free Your Condenser
The condenser is the large part of your air conditioning system that resides outside of your home. If this unit gets blocked by plants, trees, bushes, garbage, chairs, leaves or any other debris its efficiency can be affected. A dirty or blocked condenser won’t be able to receive enough air to release heat from its coils. When a condenser is obstructed, it can shut down or turn on and off repeatedly, which is known as short cycling. Keeping your condenser clean and clear of debris is not only important to keep it running but essential to its efficiency.
