We need to inform people living in Stouffville on how to prepare for and avoid house fires. Heating systems are one of the leading causes of house fires, second only to kitchen equipment, according to data; therefore, it is essential to be aware of furnace safety. Fortunately, there are some simple precautions you can take to minimize the possibility of a fire and keep your house and family safe and prepared in case of emergencies.

Furnace Fire Causes

Furnaces may get very hot, especially if they are used constantly during the wintertime. Because of the heat, you should keep the area surrounding your furnace free of clutter. The majority of Stouffville fire deaths are the consequence of flammable objects being left close to a heat source, generally the gas furnace. To reduce the risk of fire, you should leave at least three feet of space around your furnace free.

You need to look for discoloration or heat on the walls surrounding the furnace. If you discover any of these indications, contact Novel Care to have a professional heating specialist inspect your gas furnace.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness in Stouffville

As a byproduct of burning fuel for heating, your gas furnace may emit potentially hazardous gases. Some of these gases, such as carbon monoxide, are odourless, making them extremely dangerous. When typical fuel-burning appliances and equipment which burns natural gas, oil, wood, propane, and kerosene do not get enough oxygen to burn, this odourless gas is generated as a byproduct of insufficient combustion. Furnaces, though, are intended to safely exhaust harmful gases outdoors. To minimize carbon monoxide buildup in the home, make sure that your vents are clean of any clogs or dirt.

Carbon Monoxide, known by its chemical formula of CO, is a toxic gas that cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. CO is also known as the “silent killer.”

Carbon monoxide may accumulate in the house, particularly in enclosed areas, and this can have devastating consequences on humans and all living creatures.

CO has warning signs by how it affects humans. CO poisoning causes flu-like symptoms, such as:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • burning eyes
  • confusion
  • disorientation
  • drowsiness

CO poisoning affects your body’s ability to absorb oxygen. It can cause brain damage and death in extreme situations. The elderly, children, and those suffering from heart or respiratory problems may experience the affects sooner than the others. Even low quantities of CO gas might be extremely dangerous.

The best solution to protect yourself and your family in Stouffville against carbon monoxide poisoning is to eradicate it at the source. When it comes to CO safety, here is a checklist to take into account.

  • Have fuel-burning appliances installed by a professional Novel Care technician with over 35 years of experience.
  • Have all your fuel-burning appliances and vents are inspected annually.
  • Keep chimneys clear of small animals, leaves, and other debris to ensure proper ventilation.
  • Ensure your furnace is inspected for adequate ventilation.
  • Install a working carbon monoxide alarm near all sleeping areas in your home.
  • Remember to test your CO alarms once a month by pushing the test button on the unit.

Small Animals Can Cause a Furnace Fire

As leaves and tiny animals might sneak into your vents, it’s a good idea to make it a routine practice to check them frequently. If you have a cat, you may have seen it resting on the heating vent that delivers air to your ducted furnace. It may not be cold enough in the home or outside yet, but cats enjoy resting on furnace vents. Cats, like any other animal, are always looking for ways to feel relaxed. You may believe that your cat is intelligent enough to avoid every risk in your home on their own, but it may or may not recognize real danger. There are a number of HVAC hazards in your basement, including your gas furnace. Sitting near or on the furnace should not be encouraged.

We need to remind Richmond Hill residents how we can prepare for and prevent home fires. Since statistics show that heating systems are one of the main causes of home fires, second only to cooking equipment, it is important to be aware of furnace safety. Fortunately, there are some basic tips that can help to reduce the risk of fire and keep your home and family safe and prepared for emergencies.

Furnace Fire Causes

Furnaces can become hot, especially when they are in constant use during winter. This heat means that you should keep the area around your furnace clear. Most of the fire deaths in Richmond Hill are the result of combustible materials being left near a heat source, usually a furnace. Ideally, there should be at least a three-foot area of space around your furnace to reduce the risk of fire.

You should also check the walls near the furnace to check for discoloration or heat. If you notice any of these signs in the vicinity, call a professional heating expert from Novel Care to check for gas furnace dangers.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness in Richmond Hill

As a side effect of burning fuel for heat, your furnace will produce potentially dangerous fumes. Some of these fumes, including carbon monoxide, can be odourless, which makes them especially dangerous. This odourless gas is produced as a byproduct of combustion when common fuel-burning appliances and equipment that use natural gas, oil, wood, propane and kerosene don’t get enough air to burn up completely. Fortunately, furnaces are designed to safely vent these fumes outside. Therefore, to avoid carbon monoxide build-up in the house, it is important to ensure that your vents are clear of any obstructions or debris.

Carbon Monoxide, also known as CO, is a poisonous gas that you can’t see, smell or taste. CO is often referred to as the “silent killer”.

Carbon monoxide at home can build up, especially in a confined room or space – and this can lead to toxic effects on humans and pets.

CO has warning signs by how it affects humans. CO poisoning causes flu-like symptoms, including:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • burning eyes
  • confusion
  • disorientation
  • drowsiness

CO poisoning makes it difficult for your body to absorb oxygen. In severe cases, it can cause brain damage and death. The elderly, children and people with heart or respiratory issues may feel the effects sooner than others. Even small amounts of CO gas can be dangerous.

The best way to ensure that you and your family in Richmond Hill are not exposed to carbon monoxide is to eliminate this poisonous gas at the source. Here is a list to follow when it comes to CO safety.

Leaves and small animals can get into your vents, so it is a good idea to establish a routine of checking your vents are clear. If you’re a cat owner, you may notice your cat sitting on the heating vent that distributes air for your forced air furnace. It might not even be that cold in the house or outside yet, but cats love sitting on furnace registers. Cats, like any other animal, are constantly searching for comfort. You might think that your cat is smart enough to avoid all danger in your home on its own, but it may or may not understand where the danger lies. In your basement, there are several HVAC dangers, including your furnace. Sitting near or on the furnace shouldn’t be something you encourage. There is always a chance they get too close to the pilot light or brush up against a hot tube or duct. Cat and small animals pose a furnace fire hazard.

With the days getting shorter and the temperature slowly starting to inch closer and closer to that freezing mark, you’ll want to take care of a few things around the house before winter arrives. While most people have a checklist in mind for the spring and fall months, there isn’t a specific date you need to worry about. Just make sure you follow these straightforward fall and winter HVAC tips to get the most out of your furnace and air conditioner.

What Tips You Should Know About HVAC Systems in Fall and Winter

When it comes to getting the most out of your HVAC systems, maintenance is key. Start with the basics and switch out your air filters. This should be done every few months to help make sure that your systems are receiving enough airflow. The better the airflow, the better the performance. Plus, a well-kept air filter means the air in your home is a bit cleaner too, which is good for your overall health – especially if you have allergies.

Another common fall and winter HVAC tip to follow should be to book regular maintenance checkups for both your heating and cooling system. It might seem odd to call a professional to look at your air conditioner at the end of a hot summer, but it’s always good practice to make sure there are no surprises next summer. And before you flip on that furnace, it doesn’t hurt to book some maintenance either. Imagine if you left your car in the garage all summer and then started it up in the winter to go for a ride. Avoid any surprises by having a professional sign off on things if you can.

Last but not least, you should make sure your thermostat is working properly. While it is recommended to have a smart thermostat, it’s not always within the budget. However, most thermostats allow you to program the temperature. Make sure it’s not working too hard by keeping things cooler during the day while you’re at work or out of the house. You can set the thermostat to warm your home closer to the time when you’ll be there the most. This saves your furnace from overworking and keeps energy costs a bit lower.

We realized that having just 5 ways to improve the indoor air quality in your home wasn’t enough, so here are 5 more that we thought might be useful.

Battle Mold

It’s no secret that mold in your home isn’t healthy in any form. It thrives in moist areas and can be tough and expensive to get rid of once it arrives. If you’re not sure about where to find mold in your home, check baseboards, radiators, and windowsills, and under any carpets in your basement. Problem areas should be cleaned with any non-toxic cleaners if possible. If you do need to go as far as to call a remediation company then ask them to do as healthy a clean up as possible.

Clean Natural Gas Appliances

Natural gas appliances are great in your home, but they need to be cleaned as well. If you’ve got an oven, fireplace, furnace, dryer or anything else that’s powered by natural gas, an annual inspection is the best way to prevent the presence of harmful airborne by-products that are a result of the combustion that occurs in gas appliances.

All Natural Cleaning Products

Cleaning products are filled with toxic chemicals and can even emit gas and airborne chemicals from sealed containers. When these chemicals are being used they also give off harmful smells and can really pollute your home’s indoor air quality. One of the best solutions is to replace all of your cleaners with all natural cleaning products. They’re not only a great way to improve your indoor air quality, they’re also biodegradable. You can also make your own cleaners using all-natural products like orange essence or white vinegar. Be sure to ventilate the air wherever you are cleaning, and then when you’re done, make sure everything is stored away safely and well-sealed.

Change Your Furnace Filter Often

One of the most important and easiest things you can do to improve your home’s indoor air quality. It’s important to use the right sized furnace filter for your home to minimize the dust and particles in the air, and to keep your furnace working properly. While changing your furnace’s air filter often will improve your indoor air quality, it will also help reduce the wear and tear on your furnace and lower your energy bills.

Smart Paints

All paint releases fine particles into the air in your home like VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). They can be irritants to the respiratory system, and can last in your home for years. Smart paints don’t have these compounds, so next time you paint think about the paint brands that you’re buying and choose ones that don’t have VOCs.

All of us want to have cleaner and crisper air in our homes. While there are some obvious things that can be done, here are a few suggestions that you may not have considered to improve your home’s indoor air quality.

Clean Scents Are Healthier

Most candles give off toxic chemicals and pollute the air in your home. Air fresheners are an even more direct source of chemical pollutants, depending on the brand and type. Instead of using chemical pollutants, try burning essential oils and using a diffuser. A stove top solution can also provide a great smelling home. boiling cloves, cinnamon, and citrus fruits on a low simmer can also create a great smelling home.

Chemical Pesticides Kill Pests, How Healthy Can They Be?

Pesticides emit fine chemical particles that can be inhaled or ingested. These types of chemicals have been connected to birth defects, nerve damage and even different types of cancers. There are a number of natural pesticides that can do the very same thing and rid your home and outdoor areas of the insects you don’t want around.

Green Building Materials

There are many banned substances in Canada, such as formaldehyde, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t in the imported products that we buy. Some building materials from other countries may still have harmful chemicals in them. Imported products like laminate floors, insulation, and carpeting can all contain chemicals that can hurt you and your family. If you are not able to use locally made materials, then take steps ensure your home has proper ventilation and a means of filtering out unwanted toxins. This can be done with ultra-fine filtration on your home comfort systems or with a whole-home purification system to reduce the risks these toxins pose. This is also a great way to maintain great indoor air quality.

Rid Your Home Of Radon

Radon is naturally occurring in nature, but that doesn’t mean it’s not harmful. Ontario in particular can have high concentrations of radon in the ground. Radon can cause cancer when people are exposed to it and is created when certain types of organic materials break down in the earth beneath and around your home. Most new home developments will not be built on radon-contaminated soil; however, older buildings may still be affected. You may wish to hire a specialist to perform tests on the land surrounding your home. Radon can definitely have a negative impact on your indoor air quality.

Gas Oven Range Hood

Range hoods are designed to reduce the effect of exhaust from your stove and oven on your home’s indoor air quality. They take care of gas and other smells, and overall reduce the contaminants that occur from your stove and oven. The best way for your range hood to clean the air in your home and ensure good indoor air quality is for it to be the same width as your stove top. This is the best way for it to catch all of the particles in the air that rise from your stove.

As the days get longer, you’ll start to feel the temperature climb too. In Toronto and the GTA, almost everyone has air conditioning to battle the rising heat of the summer months, but which type is right for you? Thankfully there are only two choices, but choosing between ductless and central could have a lot to do with your living situation and budget.

Ductless Costs Less Than Central Air Conditioning

It really does depend on your home, but ductless is less invasive to install, making it more cost-effective. For example, central air conditioning is great for cooling off a home but only if you have the necessary vents/ducts in place. Central takes cold air from the main unit and pushes it through the vents of a home to spread the cool air to all rooms evenly. This is great if your home is equipped with the necessary ductwork. If it isn’t, you can imagine how expensive it might get to have your home fitted with the required vents and ducts.

Ductless on the other hand is a great alternative to central air conditioning. A ductless unit can be installed to cool a given area of your home. Most often, this option is installed in a large common area of the home like a living room or family room for maximum effectiveness.

How Ductless Air Conditioning Works

Designed to work best for spot cooling, ductless air conditioning can be a single subtle unit installed to help you beat the heat. It draws in air from outside, runs it through the unit for cooling, and redistributes the air to the given room via a small fan. It doesn’t require too much work to install, which is great for those looking to cool off without breaking the bank. Also, the subtle design of ductless air conditioning means it won’t clash with the room’s décor.

Naturally, you can choose to have more than one ductless air conditioning unit in a bigger home, but this is something a professional can recommend after seeing your residence.

Novel Care Is Toronto’s Choice For Ductless Air Conditioning

Toronto and the GTA is a big place with a ton of options to choose from when it comes to professional installers. Narrowing it down can be tricky, but Novel Care makes it easy. Our team has been in the business of installing, maintaining and repairing all HVAC systems, including ductless air conditioning for more than 30 years. We put our customers first, every time. Give us a call at 416-921-0000 to learn more, ask us questions, or to set up your free consultation. We guarantee we can help. Contact us today and let us keep you cool this summer!

In 2010, we had a client reach out to us with a few questions about if whether a ductless cooling unit made sense for her. Here’s how Novel Care was able to help.

Is A Ductless Cooling Unit Worth It?

That was the main question we received from Cheryl one spring afternoon. Cheryl was a single mother who had pretty much had enough of living in her older condo unit without any form of air conditioning. She had just moved in last year and her 2-year-old wasn’t a fan of the hot humid temperatures that Toronto and the GTA tend to get in the summer. Fans weren’t doing the trick, so Cheryl wanted to inquire about a ductless cooling unit.

She said she was referred by another client of ours and heard good things. Admittedly, she said she didn’t really know too much about ductless cooling units, so we gladly took some time to explain the pros and cons.

Save More With A Ductless Cooling Unit

After walking Cheryl through her options, she came to the conclusion that a ductless cooling unit made sense for her one bedroom condo. Since the space is just big enough and all on one floor, ductless would serve to cool the space quite nicely.

We got to work right away so she would be ready for the upcoming summer, and got the job done in great time. Cheryl called back at the end of the summer to thank us for taking the time to help her out, and that her little one slept through those warm summer nights.

Leave Your Ductless Cooling Unit Installation To The Pros

After 30 years of installing, maintaining and repairing Toronto and the GTA’s HVAC systems, you can rest assured that Novel Care is the right choice. We’ve helped countless clients navigate through all the makes and models of ductless cooling units out there, and find the one that works best for them. You don’t need to be overwhelmed or worry about hiring one of the countless professionals this megacity has to offer. Just give us a call at 416-921-0000 to get started. One of our professionals would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. If we can help a baby sleep through the summer, we know we can help you beat the heat this season. Contact us today

Andrew and Cheryl own a small semi-detached home in the west end of Toronto. It’s an older home that has a nice new boiler and radiator system to keep it well heated throughout the winter. We know because we installed the boiler, but that’s another story. This time around they needed to get their ductless air conditioner ready for the spring.

In the fall when they last used it, their ductless air conditioner had a squeaking noise and wasn’t blowing as cold as they were used to. At the time it wasn’t a big deal because they were shutting it down for the year, but with spring on the horizon they knew they’d be using it soon enough.

Andrew and Cheryl called us, Novel Care, a week ago to come and take a look at their ductless air conditioner well in advance of spring. They wanted to make sure it was ready to go when the warm weather arrived. They also had the money saved up and ready to spend in case they needed to replace it, which they didn’t. Luckily, they called us before allowing it to operate through a small issue. We won’t bore you with the details, but the repairs were fairly simple.

We were in and out of their home in a few hours at very little cost to them. Their ductless AC is now ready to run all spring, summer and fall to keep their home cool and refreshing.  If they had allowed their mini split AC to work all summer long without being serviced they would certainly have run into bigger problems that would take longer to fix and certainly be more expensive. Their foresight worked in their favour and we’re happy they called us early.

In the spring and summer we field so many emergency ductless air conditioner repair calls because people have neglected a small repair or annual maintenance. With these issues being so avoidable, we wish more people were as diligent as Andrew and Cheryl.

For more information about ductless air conditioner maintenance or to book a ductless air conditioner repair or maintenance appointment contact us today at 416-921-0000.

Did you know that as much as 30% of any home’s energy budget can be the result of creating hot water? It’s certainly one thing to keep in mind if you’re building a new home, renovating an older home of retrofitting your existing water heating system. The big decision is whether you should install another hot water tank or a tankless water heater.

When it’s time to evaluate your existing hot water or water heating system you’ll have to make the choice. Do you want the same thing you already have or do you want to try something different and new. Most homeowners will just opt for the same size water tank to replace their existing one. This can be the result of their current supply recommendation or just simply out of not putting much thought into the decision.

You probably know that a traditional hot water tank simply keeps a reservoir of hot water ready to go all day every day, whether it’s being used or not. Comparatively, a tankless water heater only creates hot water when it’s demanded by a faucet or appliance. Overall, this means less stored water, less cost and less space taken up in your home.

A Tankless Water Heater Summary

  • Size matters when you purchase and install a tankless water heater. They can be purchased to service a single room in the house or the entire house. It really depends on your need. It’s important to understand how many faucets and appliances will be demanding hot water from your home in order to select the right sized tankless water heater.
  • Tankless water heaters typically run on natural gas, propane or electricity. It’s important to understand what options you have available depending on the type of installation. Electric models will require specific voltage and amperage while gas models will need with electricity and venting to operate properly and safely.
  • The farther north you go in Canada the colder the water coming into the house will be. This will affect both the flow and speed of the water as it heats up in your tankless water heater.
  • If you have a busy household then it might make sense to have a larger unit. This will allow you to do things like run the dishwasher, the laundry and take a shower all at the same time.
  • Many models have available rebates, which can save you money up front. The upfront cost is another reason people turn back to hot water tanks. Rebates can come from manufacturers, utility providers, municipalities and other government divisions.
  • The payback on a tankless water heater is long-term. Up front these units will cost you more. They can range between $800 and $1200, while a hot water tank is about $400 to $800. These costs don’t include installation. The difference is that over the many years you use hot water in your home. The tankless hot water heater will save you money each month on your energy bills. It’s also much more environmentally friendly because it uses less energy. A tankless water heater can be up to 35% more efficient than a traditional hot water tank.

For more information about purchasing or installing a tankless unit contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000. We work with many top end manufacturers such as Rinnai, Navien and Noritz.

Looking for performance and energy savings in your commercial HVAC system? Schedule an HVAC Coil Cleaning appointment today and notice the benefits of clean coils versus dirty coils right away.

It should be known that HVAC maintenance at the commercial and residential levels is absolutely important. If anyone tells you otherwise they don’t know what they’re talking about. Proper HVAC maintenance is the best way to ensure that your system operates as efficiently as possible for as long as possible. Deterioration of the part and the efficiency of an HVAC system will happen over time no matter what you do, but maintenance can drastically reduce how much and how fast that happens. One very important part of HVAC maintenance is HVAC Coil Cleaning.

The difference in terms of performance between an HVAC system with clean coils versus one with dirty is incredible to say the least. Dirty HVAC coils prevent your system from operating at peak efficiency, which means it needs to use more energy to operate. As a result of using more energy, your HVAC system is costing you more on a monthly basis on your energy bills. That’s just one main reason why HVAC Coil Cleaning is so important.

On top of efficiency, HVAC Coil Cleaning is important for health reasons. Dirty HVAC coils can affect how well your system control humidity, they can breed bacteria, they can impede air flow throughout your building, and as mentioned they can drastically affect your monthly expenses. While we’re discussing how much dirty coils affect costs, it’s important to know that dirty HVAC coils can also lead to more breakdowns and the needs for replacement parts. They can also lead to the need to prematurely replace your entire HVAC system, or at the least parts of it.

Statistically speaking, dirty coils can consume up to 37% more energy than clean ones. They can also be a major factor in losing up to 30% of your heating and cooling capacity.

Booking an HVAC Coil Cleaning with a professional HVAC technician like those at Novel Care Toronto will address all of these problems. They will remove the dirt and dust from your unit without damaging the coils or any of the associated part. Professional HVAC Coil Cleaning will lead to better airflow, higher efficiency, improved indoor air quality, lower expenses, and with a company like Novel Care Toronto 100% satisfaction, guaranteed.

For more information about HVAC Coil Cleaning contact Novel Care Toronto today: 416-921-0000.

September, October and November are typically the best months of the year to save money on utility bills because there isn’t a need for a furnace or air conditioner. If you get too hot you can open windows and take off clothes, or even turn on fans. If you get too cold a sweater or blanket isn’t usually too far away. Luckily, you can expect to get one of the lowest energy bills of the entire year, if you play your cards right, and by cards we mean paying attention to your energy usage.

However, this month temperatures are dipping a little low and mid November might be the time to fire up your furnace. If you have had an HVAC technician already perform annual maintenance on your furnace then you likely won’t run into any problems, but if you haven’t then there’s no time like the present. There are some basic things that need to be done in order to make sure it’s ready for an entire winter season.

Turning Your Furnace On For The First Time

Your furnace has been sitting all winter long, it collects dust just like everything else and as a result needs a good cleaning, along with your vents and duct system. When you run your furnace for the first time you might smell something that resembled burning, but don’t worry that just all the accumulated dust being toasted. If you find that the smell isn’t dissipating after an hour then it might be something more than dust and you should call an experienced HVAC technician at Novel Care.

There are a few other precautions you should take if you haven’t had a furnace tune-up and you’re starting the heating season on your own:

  • Change the filter – Your filter needs to be changed whenever its clogged, which can be up to once every few months depending on how dusty your house is. remember the blower also blows air through the filter during the summer while air conditioning your home.
  • Clear the furnace area – If your furnace is located in a storage area of your home it’s important to make sure nothing has been piled against or too close to your furnace. Anything that’s flammable can catch fire.
  • Test your thermostat – Even if your thermostat worked reliably in cooling mode, it’s worth double-checking its accuracy in heating mode. Take a digital thermometer from room to room to make sure your home is heating accurately and evenly.

Winter Is Coming, Are You Ready?

In addition to preparing your furnace there are a few things you can do to ensure your home is ready for winter. They are easier than you might think, take a look:

  • Check and replace weather-stripping – You should have some form of weather-stripping on every window and exterior door. But time and the elements can take a toll, and weather-stripping may peel or become cracked. Wherever you find damaged weather-stripping, replace it before it turns into a chilly draft.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned – If you have a functional wood-burning fireplace that you intend to use, complete this service before building your first fire.
  • Trim your trees – Pay particular attention to tree limbs that could fall onto power lines or through windows if they were to suddenly break. If you live in an area that experiences ice storms, the added weight of ice buildup could very well bring those limbs down.
  • Prepare an emergency kit – Winter storms can develop suddenly, and severe storms could leave you without power and heat for hours or days. Store at least a three-day supply of fresh water and non-perishable food, as well as flashlights, batteries, a radio, blankets and medical supplies. If you have a generator, keep it maintained and ready.
  • Test your carbon monoxide detectors – Cracked furnace heat exchangers are among the most common causes of carbon monoxide leaks. During heating season, make sure you have at least one carbon monoxide detector for each floor of your home, and test those detectors monthly.

Getting your home ready for winter is essential to keeping it warm and running as efficiently as possible. Fall might not technically be over, but Mother Nature doesn’t care what our calendar says. If it’s cold out you need to be ready. For professional furnace maintenance, furnace repair or furnace installation contact an HVAC technician from Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

Maintaining your home in Toronto and the GTA can be time consuming, but it is important. Whether it’s salting the sidewalk in the winter, or taking care of your yard in the summer, you have obligations to keep your property running smooth – and that includes your boiler. After responding to emergency calls and helping homeowners for more than 30 years, we have a few Toronto boiler tips to help you get the most out of your boiler, and reduce the risk of it breaking down. Have a look below at just a few things you can do yourself.

Toronto Boiler Tips: Watch Water Levels

Boilers need a certain level of water to work efficiently, which is why you should take the time to check that level at least once a month – if not every 2 weeks or so. When the water level is too low, your boiler can be under added stress and work harder than it needs to. This can lead to wear and tear or even cause it to breakdown and need service. While this is good for our business, it’s not for you. Instead, check the plumbing around it to ensure everything is running correctly. If you’re unable to correct the issue, call a professional to take a look.

Toronto Boiler Tips: Eliminate Lime-Scale Buildup

Through a process known as de-scaling, you can reduce any lime-scale buildup in your boiler. When lime-scale builds in your boiler, it decreases its efficiency. This makes it hard for you to enjoy the right temperature in your home. Pay your local hardware store a visit and explain that you’ll need to descale your boiler. You should find an affordable solution and the process doesn’t take too much effort from you. Plus it will prolong the life of your boiler.

Toronto Boiler Tips: Don’t Forget To Flush

The last of our Toronto boiler tips includes flushing your boiler. This should be done a couple times a year to make sure everything is running smooth. The process itself is straightforward. There is one valve to release the water from your boiler and another to put fresh water back in. One thing to remember is to not leave the boiler unattended while it refills, and to go slowly when refilling the boiler. Too much cold water all at once into a hot boiler can cause it to crack. Slow and steady is the way to go.

Most people know that baseboard heating is one of the most inefficient ways to heat your home. If you don’t know what this is, baseboard heating is a series of metal units placed along the bottom of exterior walls of your home, typically under windows. These units can be controlled in various ways, but they directly use electricity to provide radiant heat to your home. While they do a good job of heating spaces they use much more energy than pretty much every other method of heating your home.

Furnaces vs Baseboard Heating

Most new furnaces use natural gas to heat air that is then forced throughout your home via a system of ductwork. New high-efficiency furnaces are very efficient and one of the most affordable ways to heat your home. The price of natural gas versus electricity is very different, and your furnace doesn’t need to use as much of it to operate properly. On top of that, your furnace is much smarter and more efficient at heating the air being used in your home, it also comes equipped with a humidity controls. This allows you to properly control the humidity in your home.

Boilers vs Baseboard Heating

Like furnaces, boilers are much more efficient at heating your home than baseboard heating is. Boilers don’t do exactly what it sounds like. They don’t actually boil water, but they do heat it up quite a bit in order to distribute heat throughout a system of piping and radiators throughout your home. As you may have guessed, most boilers operate on natural gas and are very efficient. They provide your home with reliable heating that will cost you much less than baseboard heating.

Replace Your Baseboard Heating Today

While it might be a little bit of an up front cost to replace baseboard heating in your home, you will certainly make up for the cost in the long run. Installing a boiler in a home without existing ductwork or installing a furnace in a home that has ductwork is fairly affordable and over time will pay for itself. Your baseboard heating system is simply costing you a lot to heat your home; you can literally save hundreds of dollars a year on your heating bills by replacing your baseboard heating.

Contact a Novel Care HVAC technician today to learn more about replacing your baseboard heating system. Our friendly staff will help you make an educated choice about what alternative fits your budget, your home and your lifestyle: 416-921-0000.

When’s the last time you planned for an appliance to break down? From refrigerators and stoves to washing machines and dryers, there isn’t much warning when something stops working. This is especially true of your furnace. While you may have signs to look out for – such as age – the chances of you knowing exactly when your furnace will give out aren’t in your favour. So what do you do when you need Toronto furnace repairs?

Searching For Toronto Furnace Repairs

In a city like Toronto and the GTA, there is no shortage of people available to “help” whenever you need it. Moving? Go online. Need some landscaping? Go online. Looking for a used car and want to skip the dealership… you get the idea. The answer for just about anything is to go on your phone, tablet, or home computer and start looking for whatever your heart desires. The only trouble is, you don’t want to pay a fortune and you don’t want to get ripped off.

This is where some research comes into play. Typing “cheap Toronto furnace repairs near me” might yield some results, but the cheapest option available could be a guy who fixed a furnace that one time for his friend. Take a second and look for the right signs before turning over your hard-earned money to a stranger. Rest assured, the last thing you want is to gamble on your furnace. Saving a few bucks now could result in you needing a new furnace well before its time has come.

As a homeowner in Toronto and the GTA, it’s important to manage your spending when it comes to your new investment. Finding the best deal on appliances and fixtures is one thing, but cutting corners usually leads to more expensive problems down the line. While Toronto Furnace Sales might advertise a cheap price, you should always choose the furnace that best suits your home – rather than saving a few bucks upfront.

Toronto Furnace Sales Aren’t Always About Price

Searching online for the best priced furnace is always a smart decision before you buy. However, searching for the “best Toronto furnace sales” won’t help narrow down your options very much. There are all types of models from a variety of brands promising their unit is the best. To know for sure, you’ll need a bit of guidance. A professional installer can provide you with some insights on which models might work for you.

Cost might be an issue when trying to stay on budget, but it’s important to at least know where you stand. Cheaper isn’t always the way to go. You’ll need to think about how many people are in your home, how well-insulated it is, and how big it is to properly select a furnace that will get the job done right. If you have a smaller space to heat then maybe a unit with less power would be exactly what the doctor ordered for your home. On the other hand, the more space you have to heat, as well as how good your insulation is, might require you to have something stronger than your typical output. Energy efficiency is always important in keeping your monthly bills under control, but that’s not always front and centre when people search for Toronto furnace sales.

While most days are great to spend some time in a park, sit on a patio, or just be out on the water, extreme heat warnings are also a part of summer in Toronto and the GTA. These can force you to minimize your fun in the sun, and are especially dangerous for seniors and pets. With a mother-in-law living with them in their bungalow, Dave and Joanne contacted us to handle their ductless AC in Toronto.

Full Service Ductless AC In Toronto

This newly married couple had just moved into an older bungalow in Toronto and the GTA when Dave’s mom came to live with them for a bit. She was planning to move to Florida to retire and had just sold her home. Dave and Joanne couldn’t resist offering her a place to stay until her new unit was ready down in the states. The only trouble was this happened to be during the scorching months of summer in the city, so this couple wanted to make sure their new home was ready. For ductless AC in Toronto, they called Novel Care.

We got to work right away, dispatching an expert to assess the home and make recommendations. Ultimately, for a home with 2 bedrooms, living/dining room, kitchen, en suite bathroom and powder room, ductless AC made the most sense for this home. The home’s insulation was quite good, and the basement was a bit unfinished, so sufficient cooling down there wasn’t a top priority. Not only would one unit efficiently cool their living space, it would not be as invasive to install either. This helped Dave and Joanne get peace of mind knowing Dave’s mom was cool no matter how high the mercury climbed.

Dave and Joanne actually reached out to us about a year after our visit for some maintenance. It turns out their installation came at the perfect time since Dave’s mom ended up staying a few extra weeks than expected. While it was nice to hear she eventually got to Florida to enjoy her new home, it was a nice surprise to hear that Dave and Joanne were expecting a new member of their family soon too. Dave said there’s really no substitute for keeping his pregnant wife cool in the middle of a heat wave.

There’s no denying that the city of Toronto and the GTA can get humid and uncomfortable when the summer months come by. Our client Harpreet can attest to that. With a new dog under a year old and a baby on the way, his central air conditioning gave out just as the temperature began to climb. Harpreet eventually found us after a tedious search for heating and air conditioning in Toronto. We were glad to help in a hurry.

When Heating and Air Conditioning in Toronto Can’t Wait

Imagine the mercury rising, so you turn on your air conditioner. Only trouble is that it’s not quite as cool as you’d like. You tinker with the thermostat but nothing is working. Something is wrong. Add in the pup running around and a pregnant wife, and you can understand just how stressed out Harpreet was when he began his search for heating and air conditioning in Toronto. Thankfully, he found us soon after.

Once he explained the issue, we were able to dispatch someone to his home fairly quick. Our expert worked with Harpreet to explain what the issues were, and what kind of budget he had to work with. Thankfully, his budget wasn’t too strict since the unit was better off being replaced than repaired. We explained that there was a warranty in place with the new model, and Harpreet should feel comfortable giving us a call should anything go wrong.

Our expert recommended a central air conditioning unit that made sense for the size of the home. We were even able to schedule the installation a day later to ensure it was up and running when the heat kicked in that week. Harpreet followed up with us to say thank you and that his ac was running great. Oh, and his new baby girl was safe from the sticky summer temperatures.

If you’ve got a ductless air conditioner installed in your home then you might already know the benefits to having one. If you know very little about ductless air conditioners, but know that you need one for your space because it’s the best option then you’ve come to the right place. Ductless air conditioning systems circulate cool air-conditioned air throughout your home or space without and ductwork needed. Ductless air conditioning systems are an affordable alternative to central heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC ) systems, which need a network of ducts to move air. Ductless air conditioning systems are typically seen as more efficient and easier to maintain than window air conditioners, and high-efficient, affordable and reliable alternatives to central air conditioners.

If you live in an old house that has no ducts, or a newer house that does not use forced air heat (and does not need ducts), it can be a big expense to install a central air conditioning system. Installing central air conditioning doesn’t just mean installing the condenser unit outside, it also means installing a network of ducts in your home. This means lots of heavy construction and ripping walls apart. If the cost and hassle aren’t something you’re interested in then ductless air conditioners are the best solution.

5 Benefits of Ductless Air Conditioning Systems

  1. Easy Installation: Ductless air conditioning systems are very easy to install. In fact they can be installed in a fraction of the time it takes to install a central air conditioning system. Typically, it would take a few HVAC technicians to install a central air conditioning system over the course of a week or two. A ductless air conditioning system or a ductless mini split system can be installed in a single day.
  2. Small: Ductless air conditioning systems don’t take up much space. They consist of an internal air handling unit that seamlessly integrates with your home decor, and an external condenser unit that sites outside of your home. The two components are connected by numerous wires and tubes to create your ductless air conditioning system. Both units take up very little space, and much less space than a full duct system.
  3. Easy Operation: Ductless air conditioners are as easy to operate as flat screen televisions. They typically come with a remote control that’s very easy to use. They allow you to control the temperature, the direction of the airflow, as well as numerous other settings. Overall, any ductless air conditioning system you have installed should be very easy to use.
  4. Affordable: Ductless air conditioning systems don’t use as much electricity to operate as central air conditioners. It’s actually significantly less, which save you money every month on your hydro bills. On top of that they operate specifically when people are in their vicinity. So, you aren’t cooling places in your home that are empty. You can turn on and off all of your ductless air conditioners individually, so they only cool the places you want. By comparison, central air conditioners operate throughout your entire home all the time, so there is no way to efficiently target specific areas of your home.
  5. Shhhhhh: Ductless air conditioning systems are very quiet. Some indoor air handling units are so quiet you can’t even hear them operating, and outdoor condenser units are also very quiet for the most part. Overall, ductless air conditioning systems are designed to ensure that your home environment is a comfortable sanctuary.

Before setting out to spend your money, it’s important to know a bit more about ductless HVAC systems. Weighing the pros and the cons is always a good idea when it comes to investing in your home. After all, Toronto and the GTA is a big place, and upgrades for your home can get expensive quick if you don’t ask the right questions. Take a look below for a quick rundown of what you need to know.

What Does Your Home Need?

To start, you’ll want to identify what type of ductwork your home has in place. If the answer is none, then ductless HVAC systems make more sense.
These systems are made up of an outdoor condenser, indoor unit, and tubing that connect the two. The outdoor component brings in the air, while the indoor unit cools it to your desired temperature. It should be noted that this is a known way to save some money on your next energy bill too! Central air units tend to lose as much as 30% of their efficiency while traveling through ductwork, so ductless is beneficial in the long run.

When It Comes To Ductless HVAC Systems, Start With The Best

Any time you’re doing research, it’s easy to start with the best brands for home upgrades. This case is no different. Here are just some of the bigger, more reliable companies that make ductless HVAC systems you can count on.

It should be noted that while ductless might be ideal for your home, you should consult with a professional installer to see how many units you might need. You see, these ductless air conditioning systems are designed for spot cooling specifically. That means if your home is on the larger side, you’ll need more than just one unit to cool the entire residence. Plus it’s always a good idea to go with a pro when making upgrades, rather than looking for just the cheapest option available.

Installers Serving Toronto And The GTA

In the spirit of getting things done right the first time, going with the cheapest self-proclaimed professional isn’t recommended here. The right pro will have the experience to make recommendations based on your budget and needs.

We’d be more than happy to answer your questions and help you get started on navigating through all the available ductless HVAC systems, and narrowing down which works best for you.

For those of you lucky enough to own a home in Toronto and the GTA, you know what that’s worth. The last thing you’d want to do is jeopardize its value with a wonky installation of any renovations. That’s why it’s so important to find the right Toronto ductless air company for your cooling needs.

Leave The Upgrades To A Toronto Ductless Air Company

When it comes to older homes, central air conditioning isn’t always an affordable option. Installation is run through an entire home, making it quite invasive and costly. This is why ductless air conditioning is a much more reasonable and cost-effective choice.

Providing spot cooling to areas of your home, ductless can help control the temperature of whichever room it’s in. Installation is much simpler too. It consists of a unit indoors, a compressor outdoors, and tubing to connect the two. This drastically lowers the amount of work it takes, which helps keep the cost of installation much more reasonable.

Don’t forget, ductless air conditioning has many benefits to an older home, but this way of cooling your home depends on its size and how well insulated it is. The bigger the home, the more units you might need to keep it cool when the mercury rises on a hot day. Also, if insulation is poor, you might end up seeing that reflected on your next energy bill – no matter which type of cooling unit you have. Most important of all, you should always have the right Toronto ductless air company handling all your installation and maintenance needs. This not only ensures you get a quality installation but also helps with liability too.

Which Toronto Ductless Air Company Should I Choose?

In Toronto and the GTA, there is no shortage of handymen and other do-it-yourselfers available for hire, but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you. It’s important to think of your home as an investment. Each renovation or upgrade you make should be done right to avoid any problems in the future. Plus, the more professional the upgrade, the more value is added to your home. That’s why, when it comes to narrowing down which Toronto ductless air company to use, you should do a bit of research.

At Novel Care, our experts have been serving Toronto and the GTA for over 30 years. We specialize in installation and maintenance of all types of HVAC systems. As a Toronto ductless air company, we guarantee you won’t find a more dedicated team of professionals ready to help. We’re even available 24/7 to handle any emergencies our customers may experience. Contact us at 416-921-0000 to book your installation today. It’s our pleasure to keep your home cool this summer.

If you’re one of the lucky few to have a home in Toronto and the GTA, you probably fall into one of two categories. The first see people building up a “fixer-upper” into their dream home. This is great if you have the funds to do so. Seeing as more and more people are proving that money doesn’t grow on trees, you might be part of another group. This second group might not have the disposable income to pour into pricey renovations and need more practical solutions. Ductless air conditioning systems are exactly that. They allow homeowners to experience the positive effects of air conditioning without having the expense of installing a central unit.

Upgrade Your Home with Ductless Air Conditioning Systems

In the case of older homes, central air conditioning may not be available and in Toronto and the GTA, that just won’t do. Summers can get quite uncomfortable with the humidity, but installing a central unit is a big job. A lot goes into setting up the proper ventilation of your home. Ductless heat pump systems help on a much more affordable scale.

Overall, they serve a smaller portion of your home, requiring less installation and cost. Choosing ductless mini split systems is straightforward. You’ll decide which room you want to keep the coolest and that’s where a unit will be set up. Additionally, the tubing will connect the indoor unit with a compressor outside. This minimizes the amount of installation necessary, keeping your costs lower.

Just remember, ductless air conditioning systems are designed to cool smaller areas. Spot cooling can be as effective as central air conditioning, but only in a given area. That means you may need more than one unit installed if you’re looking to control the temperature of a larger home or even one with more than one floor. This is an excellent solution if your home is thoroughly insulated though.

Who do I call to install ductless air conditioning systems?

It’s always important to find the right person for any job regarding your home. Saving a few bucks upfront and cutting corners is never the answer, and certainly won’t protect your investment in the case of your home. Be sure to put in a bit of time finding a professional with experience installing ductless air conditioning systems.

At Novel Care, we’ve spent the past 30 years serving Toronto and the GTA. Our experts specialize in HVAC maintenance and installation, which include ductless air conditioning systems. Rest assured, our customer service and satisfaction are second to none. In fact, we’re available 24/7 to help with any emergency repairs or problems you might experience. Contact us at 416-921-0000 to get started. We’d be more than happy to help you stay cool this summer.

If you’re living in Toronto and the GTA, you already know things can get expensive fast. Whether it’s the cost of gas going up, your favourite restaurant raising its prices, or a few things that need upgrading around your home, saving money isn’t easy. In fact, it’s pretty stressful. To make matters worse, unexpected repairs can drain your savings in the blink of an eye. That’ why many homeowners turn to a furnace protection plan to ensure they’re covered.

Since no one really thinks about their furnace until something breaks, it’s important to plan ahead. Having a Furnace Protection Plan in place reduces the risk of large expensive repairs.

What Is A Furnace Protection Plan?

The simple explanation is that it’s a security blanket. If your furnace stops working in the middle of winter or needs certain repairs due to wear and tear, a Furnace Protection Plan will handle it. No charge or expensive bill to deal with. It’s easy and gives you a bit more peace of mind knowing your furnace is protected. And so is your wallet.

Is it worth it?

If you’re weighing your options about whether or not you should invest in a Furnace Protection Plan, here are some things to consider. After all, you should never just buy something without actually thinking about all the pros and cons.

Pros

  • Less stress
  • Costs less than replacements

A Furnace Protection Plan is a very good way to cover all your bases, so to speak. First off, the cost of repairs, labour, and any replacement parts are completely included. That can make a big difference depending on when you need repairs. After all, winter is a time of spending money around the holidays and playing things a bit more frugal in the New Year. Most people don’t have the money to pay for repairs that pop up, but winter is the time furnaces are used more often and can break down. A Furnace Protection Plan can save you the headache of dealing with the cost of repairs.

Cons

  • Is this something I need?
  • My furnace is in good shape

For those of you living in Toronto and the GTA, you know the value in keeping as much of your money as possible. Things are expensive and no one has money to just buy what they don’t need. With that said, it can be hard to imagine a scenario where investing in a Furnace Protection Plan is a good idea – especially if you’ve never had any trouble with your furnace. While your luck may be good right now, do you really want to leave your home’s heating to chance? When a furnace goes down, it’s more of a hassle than you think if you’re not protected. Finding a quality professional to make repairs is hard enough, but finding the money to pay them is an unwanted challenge. Plus you have to find this fairly fast to avoid pipes freezing in winter too. Remember, luck eventually runs out, so it pays to think ahead and stay protected with a Furnace Protection Plan.

Where Can I Get A Furnace Protection Plan?

In Toronto and the GTA you’ll find a bunch of self-claimed professionals willing to offer you help. Finding the best, and avoiding the rest, isn’t easy. We’ve all come home, kicked off our shoes after a long day and made our way to the couch before, but walking across a cold floor isn’t so great. Whether you prefer the comfort of socks, slippers, or bare feet, nothing says luxury like a heated floor, especially in the winter months ahead. After all, we’ll be spending more time indoors as the snow and cold air blow around outside and the temperature continues to fall. So why not enjoy the added warmth a heated floor can provide? More specifically, what radiant floor heating can provide.

What Is Radiant Floor Heating Anyway?

It’s actually a very straightforward process. Radiant floor heating consists of 3 different methods of heating your floor. While each method is unique, they all focus on running a heating system under your flooring in order to keep it the perfect temperature for you.

Electric Floor Heating

  • Electric cables and mats
  • Often paired with higher density flooring

Usually, this method of radiant floor heating involves the use of cables being fed under the floor to warm a given area. However, electric mats can also be installed to incorporate radiant floor heating as well. One thing to be aware of with this type of electric heating is that it works best when paired with a floor that can retain heat. The thicker the material of the floor, the longer the heat can be stored, requiring less energy. Overall, a professional radiant floor heating installer can work with you to explain the details and best practises for this method of heating your floors.

Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating

  • Uses water like a boiler
  • Leak-resistant, non-toxic piping

Probably the most efficient of the 3 options would be hydronic radiant floor heating. This method operates similarly to the way a boiler works. It incorporates tubes under a given area of your floor and has water pumped through them. The water is heated to a hot enough temperature to heat the floor and remains in the tubes until the temperature drops. Once it cools a bit, the water is circulated back to the boiler to be heated again. Hydronic floor heating is the most efficient since it uses the same water in a closed system, and doesn’t require much energy to heat. Consult with a local radiant floor heating professional for more information on this style of floor heating.

Air-Heated Radiant Flooring

  • Uses air to heat your floors

Sad to say, but this is the least efficient way to heat your floors. Air-heated radiant flooring doesn’t allow for the air to stay in one spot, which makes it harder to regulate and stay warm. This is still an option of course, but it would most likely cost more due to the additional energy required to get your floor consistently warm. And since things are expensive enough in Toronto and the GTA, this may not be your best option.

The Best Time To Install Radiant Floor Heating

The short answer is, when you are making renovations to your home. Now of course you can start with planning your floor heating first and build up, whatever you prefer. In our experience, this luxury is easiest to install when you are making other renovations since floors may be getting redone or replaced and would give easy access to installing floor heating.

Floor Heating Professionals

As you probably already know, Toronto and the GTA is a big place with plenty of self-proclaimed experts waiting to offer their services. You’ll need to invest a bit of time asking the right questions and maybe even comparing a few different professionals before hiring someone. Or you could always go with a brand that has over 35 years of experience and has built a reputation on delivering customer satisfaction. Novel Care is equipped with a dedicated team of real professionals that can work with you to get what you need on a budget you can afford. Contact us at 416-921-0000 to ask about radiant floor heating and we’d gladly set up a time to assess your home for a solution that works for you. Indulge in radiant floor heating with Novel Care and live in luxury this winter.

Why is it that people seem to forget winter runs well past the holidays? For the most part, we all seem to want winter to just go away when the calendar hits January 1st as if it’s been too long already. With stores prepping us for Valentine’s Day almost before we get through Christmas, it’s no wonder we’re so geared towards looking ahead to the next season before ours has barely begun. However, it is good to plan ahead though, especially since ice-cold temperatures can hang on a bit longer in Toronto and the GTA. That’s why investing in a Boiler Protection Plan is worth considering.

Do I Really Need a Boiler Protection Plan?

It’s very fair to consider all your options before investing in a service or warranty plan. After all, it’s hard to predict whether this is something that really suits you or just feels like you’re contributing to a lost cause. Here are just a few things to think about before investing.

Pros

  • Never have to worry about costly repairs
  • Support system when you need it

Whether it’s at a grocery store and the money isn’t in your account or at a dinner and your credit card isn’t working, we’ve all experienced the stress, embarrassment and anxiety that come with not having the money to pay for something before. Most times these are quick fixes or can be explained by some error by someone else. But when your boiler breaks down, being able to blame someone else won’t fix it any faster if you aren’t protected. That could leave you without heat in the middle of the harsh Toronto winter or forcing to rearrange your funds to pay for speedy repairs. Either way, this isn’t a good situation for anyone, but a Boiler Protection Plan could help.

When you have a plan in place, you’ll never need to worry about the cost of fixing your boiler should something randomly stop working. That takes a huge weight off your shoulders knowing that someone else will take care of you.

Cons

  • Is this something I actually need?
  • I’ve had pretty good luck so far

When it comes time to consider an investment, it’s important to weigh the cons as well as the pros. The most obvious would be if your boiler is running just fine. This can make you think twice about investing in a Boiler Protection Plan. After all, if it’s not broken, why worry about fixing it, right? This can give you false hope. The best way to think about this is to try to think ahead. Even if you don’t need to use the plan in the first year, or even the second, at least you have it. Just imagine the expense of a major repair weighed against that of an annual Boiler Protection Plan. It’s really not that bad at all. Not to mention, you’ll at least have some control about when you pay. If something breaks down unexpectedly, the stress of finding the money to make the repairs can be pretty awful. When you pay for a plan, you’ll be covered all year. So you could absolutely test your luck and ride it out, but why would you want to risk it in the cold Toronto winter?

What does a Boiler Protection Plan cover?

The short answer is, just about everything. When it comes to repairs, service calls, labour, or replacement of any broken parts, a Boiler Protection Plan can cover the cost of it all. Well, at least Novel Care does. We can’t speak for other companies, but we offer plenty of coverage to keep our customers safe when things go wrong. Take a look at all the things we cover. We’ll even throw in a 22-point inspection for free to help identify any problems before they become bigger issues.

With over 30 years of experience under our belts, we’ve learned the value of providing customers with peace of mind. Contact us at 416-921-0000 and let us worry about keeping your boiler in working order all winter.

With plenty of winter still ahead, you’ll want something to help ensure you have peace of mind as the temperature continues to drop. No matter how good your furnace may be, it never hurts to have a backup plan if things go sideways unexpectedly. After all, when you know an expense is coming, it’s easier to plan for. On the other hand, surprises can leave you feeling stressed and anxious. Good thing there are companies like Novel Care offering a solution to this in the form of Furnace Protection Plan.

Is a Furnace Protection Plan a Good Investment?

Some people might be thinking twice about paying a yearly fee for this service. That’s good! You should never just blindly buy into something without giving it some thought first. This isn’t a pack of gum you’re buying. It requires you to weigh the pros and cons.

Furnace Protection: Pros

  • Peace of mind
  • Eliminate surprise repair costs

The pros are pretty obvious while the cons are a bit more about testing your luck. Consider this. Having a Furnace Protection Plan keeps you covered in the event something goes wrong. That means if it’s the middle of winter and your furnace can’t keep up with the added stress of being used more often, someone can assess the situation and repair it without any charge to you. Think about that for a second. When’s the last time you got a surprise that cost more than it should? It probably made you feel pretty overwhelmed. Nothing’s worse than always thinking about “what if this breaks down” or “how much will this cost to fix?”. These can be stressors in your life you just don’t need. Especially with your furnace. Your furnace should be something that is always ready to go when you NEED it. Not sometimes. Not only on weekends. 24/7 at your request. That’s what a Furnace Protection Plan can help with.

Furnace Protection Plan: Cons

  • Do I need it?
  • I haven’t had any problems so far

Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about the cons. Some cynics might be thinking “my furnace works pretty well, thank you very much” or “why would I pay for something that isn’t broken?”. Both are 100% valid. Investing in Furnace Protection isn’t something you might actually need every year you pay for it. You might not even need it at all for the first couple years. A Furnace Protection Plan is there to shield you from those times you DO need it. Those times when things go wrong and a repairman is looking at you to pay a bill you don’t have the money for around the holidays, or even in the new year. Those expensive bills that just hit you like a ton of bricks. Sometimes it’s good to be prepared and avoid moments like that. Especially when you have a family to think about. Not only do you want them to stay warm against the harsh Toronto winter, but you also want that peace of mind for yourself to know everything is covered, always.

So, What is a Furnace Protection Plan Anyway?

A Furnace Protection Plan is something that would help protect you from unexpected repairs that may occur during those winter months. While other companies may be different, Novel Care offers full coverage of repairs, labour, and any parts that need replacing. Plus, our experts will perform a free 22-point inspection once a year to make sure we stay ahead of any troubles that might be coming up.

You can hear the wind blowing, see the snow falling, and feel the temperature dropping. It’s winter time again in Toronto and the GTA. While this might leave some of you feeling the winter blues, others might take this as an opportunity to make some changes to their homes’ interiors. New furniture, décor, or maybe even some new electronics could seem like a few ways to freshen up the inside of any home, but what about something a bit more practical for winter? For those looking for a warm new addition to a bedroom, living room or den area, a gas fireplace installation could be just the thing.

Only trouble now is, where do you start now? Unless you know a thing or two about fireplaces, you’ll want to read our blog series about gas fireplace installation. Start below to get a better idea of which brands out there are designed to help you find what you’re looking for easily.

$100 Off Fireplace or Insert

No one ever plans to break the bank when the time comes to invest in a fireplace. That’s why we wanted to include Heatilator as one of the brands to consider when researching quality fireplaces that can help you stay on budget. Right now, they have an offer that extends until February 2017 that will save you $100 on the price of a fireplace or insert. Might explain why this brand has been doing business for quite some time now.

Dating all the way back to 1927, Heatilator has been there to create fireplaces that first-time homeowners, builders, and experts can count on. The dedication and craftsmanship that goes into every model is a big part of what makes this brand the first choice in fireplaces. The second part is that Heatilator is Affordable Too!

Take a look at their website for yourself to see the variety of heating options you have to choose from. You’ll even be able to see roughly how the model would look in a real setting, the approximate size, and frequency of maintenance required. Heatilator easily meets your needs and exceeds your expectations, every time. However, you’ll want to make sure you have a professional gas fireplace installation expert handy to set up your final choice.

Gas Fireplace Installation Experts Do It Better

Once you’ve spent some time going through your options, you’ll want a professional to install your fireplace. Only problem is that if you live in Toronto or the GTA, you’ll have so many self-proclaimed “experts” when it comes to gas fireplace installation. How will you narrow your search?

A couple of pointers when looking for any type of professional to install something would be to look into their backgrounds just a bit. If they’ve been around a long time, chances are they are doing something right. These new up and comers might be good too but it’s hard to justify gambling on a big investment like a fireplace. Another point would be to see the size of the area they serve. The larger the area means more people trust them and the bigger their operation is. These are both reliable factors to consider when hiring gas fireplace installation experts.

To help narrow down your search even more, why not consider Novel Care? We have over 35 years of experience installing and maintaining fireplaces and much more. But don’t just take our word for it, have a look at our website or give us a call at 416-921-0000! When it comes to gas fireplace installation, you can’t be too careful. For more information or answers to any questions you may have, don’t be afraid to contact us.

Now that the weather outside is frightful, you may be thinking of how you can spruce up and warm up your home’s interior. It would have to be practical. It would need to fit with the style of your home. Most importantly, it would need to help with the cold weather. Naturally, we’re talking about fireplaces! But how do you go about choosing your favourite? And what do you know about fireplace installation anyway? After all, this isn’t something you buy every day. It’s an investment, so you’ll want to take your time and choose the best one that works for you. You can also count on Novel Care to properly install it.

Rather than send you on your way with a homework assignment, we’ve made it a bit easier to get started. Have a look below to see a brand you should consider, and why it might work for you.

Fireplace Installation Requires Expertise

Now that you’ve had the chance to do some homework and expand your fireplace knowledge, it’s time to find someone to install it for you. If you live in Toronto or the GTA though, that could leave you with even more homework to find the right person for the job. Anyone can claim to know what they’re doing, but when they show up, you’re paying for their “expertise” in fireplace installation. Having the wrong person could cost you much more than you’re willing to pay. Consider the time, money and stress you could save yourself by looking into some fireplace installation experts.

You may have seen the large vacuum trucks outside of your neighbours home. They’re the ones that make a lot of noise and blow and suck out all the dust, mice, books, toys, adult movies, paper clips, and more out of the duct system. We’ve found just about everything you can imagine as we’ve been duct cleaning in Toronto, York Region and the rest of the GTA for over 30 years. Cleaning out ducts is reminiscent of when they cut open that shark in jaws and found all kinds of stuff, including a license plate.

You might think is duct cleaning in Toronto necessary? We don’t live in a desert where it’s super dusty and we keep our house very clean.

The truth is the dust and other debris doesn’t have anything to do with the amount you clean your home. Your ducts might have been filled with dust and other debris by the previous owners of your home. If you have a new home your ducts might be and are likely filled with construction dust and other construction materials.

The amount of dust in your ducts doesn’t exclusively depend on the amount of cleaning you do in your home, but also the area you live in. There are lots of train tracks and traffic in Toronto, which are constantly throwing up dust into the atmosphere. These particles make their way into everything, even your duct system. So does duct cleaning in Toronto make sense? Yes.

Duct Cleaning in Toronto is Worth It

There are two times of the year when it’s best to have your ducts cleaned. In the Spring prior to using your central air conditioner all summer long, or right now in the fall. The fall is actually the ideal time to have your ducts cleaned as you will be sealing up your home for the winter and running your furnace to keep your family warm.

Duct cleaning in Toronto prior to the winter ensures that your furnace has as little resistance as possible when pushing warm air throughout your home. You will also benefit from cleaner air in your home as all the dust, pollen and other debris won’t be forced out into the rooms in your home.

Reputable Duct Cleaning in Toronto

Some companies that offer duct cleaning in Toronto and the GTA are very pushy and try to hard sell people on their services. They might use pushy telemarketing and extremely low prices to try to persuade you to book with them on the spot. The reality of finding a company that does duct cleaning in Toronto is that they are plentiful and making a quick decision isn’t in your best interests.

Some companies will do very poor jobs and merely vacuum out your registers for a smaller fee. You’ll think you got a premier service at a great rate, but realistically only the ends of your ducts have been cleaned.

Here are some things to look for when you want to find a company to do duct cleaning in Toronto:

  • Are they properly licensed?
  • Do they have insurance?
  • Do they have a code of ethics?
  • Do they have a number of reputable references?
  • Do they have positive reviews online?

There are lots of companies that need to be avoided, otherwise you might end up paying for thorough duct cleaning in Toronto and not get what you paid for. An inexperienced company can also use the proper equipment improperly and do permanent damage to your duct system, which can cost you thousands of dollars to repair.

We typically recommend having a furnace inspection at the same time as your duct cleaning so you can go into winter with the peace of mind knowing that your heating system won’t let you down.

There comes a time in every homeowner’s life when the inevitable happens. Your trusty old furnace just isn’t as trusty as it once was. Hopefully it happens in the fall before the first cold snap of the winter, but your furnace has now broken down. A technician has told you that it’s going to be cheaper in the short and long-term to buy a new furnace than it is to fix your existing one. At this point many people might get stressed out, but since replacing your furnace is something you can’t really control at a certain point, think of this as an opportunity.

New Furnace Options

Why should you think of this as an opportunity? First of all, we do understand that purchasing a new furnace is fairly expensive, but put that aside for a moment and consider the other benefits.

Since your last furnace was installed furnace technology has drastically improved. A new furnace will most certainly be quieter, more efficient, smaller, and cost you less month to month and in the long-term.

Now that you’re buying a new furnace you can ask a professional HVAC technician what the best model is for your home. An HVAC technician has the experience and knowledge to make the best recommendation for your needs. This means you can choose a high-efficiency model that will save you money on your energy bill each month. These models also reduce your carbon footprint.

Newer furnaces are also much smarter and easier to fix than older models as they use advanced technology to heat your home.

The Cost of A New Furnace

Depending on the make and model of your new furnace they can cost anywhere between $2000 and $5000 for a typical residential model. At Novel Care we understand that not everyone has $5000 just lying around ready to spend on a furnace. This is why we work with manufacturers to offer our customers great HVAC promotions. We also offer great furnace financing options and once you have your new furnace our HVAC protection plans are the perfect way to keep your investment working for you.

Overall, we make it easier to buy a new furnace, so you don’t have to pay for it all up front.
