Purchasing a brand new furnace is a serious decision these days because there are so many options, including different brands, models, and variations, technical capabilities, furnace types, and efficiency ratings. However, one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a new furnace is the size that is best suitable for your home in Aurora.

A Building Permit from Aurora Town Hall is usually not required for furnace replacement if no building alterations are taking place.

Installing a properly sized furnace requires more than simply calculating your home’s square footage. There are various aspects to consider while sizing a new gas furnace. Now we’ll go over what those factors are, why properly sizing a furnace is so important, and how to find a furnace that’s the right size for your location, environment, and comfort needs.

The goal of this article is to guide you in choosing the required size of furnace for your heating needs. It is calculated by taking the required heating BTU per square foot for most homes and your climate zone. Our heating BTU calculator takes these critical things into consideration, allowing you to give an answer for common questions as “how many BTUs to heat a home?” or “What size furnace do I need?”

The BTU per square foot heating rule of thumb varies greatly depending on your climate and the area of your house or room you wish to heat up. Aurora is located in Zone 2.

Why choosing the best Furnace Size Is So Important?

While it may be appealing to choose a smaller furnace to save money on the purchase or a larger furnace to increase space-heating, we should follow the Golden Mean rule with furnaces, just as we should with many aspects in our lives: you need one that is just right for your home.

A furnace which is far too powerful will cycle irregularly. This is problematic because it will generate hot and cold zones around the house, decrease efficiency, require additional maintenance, and shorten the life of the furnace.

An undersized furnace will operate non-stop and won’t keep the temperature in your home at comfortable levels. The additional workload will also increase your energy bills, inrease the probability of maintenance issues, and also shorten the lifespan of your heating unit.

Another drawback of having a furnace that is the incorrectly sized is that it will reduce the overall efficiency of your heating system.
The AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the thermal efficiency measurement of a furnace based on normal operation. The AFUE tries to represent the equipment’s actual, season-long average efficiency, taking into account all operating factors.

You won’t be able to get the efficiency rating you paid for if your furnace runs continuously or irregularly because it is the wrong size. That means more energy use and higher heating expenses.

Your furnace must be correctly sized for your home in order to perform at the efficiency level it is rated for.

How many BTU do I need for my house in Aurora?

That is a crucial question that must be answered correctly. On the coldest winter days, a furnace that is way too undersized will not heat your home properly. Areas further away from the furnace may become uncomfortably cold in your home.

An oversized furnace will waste large amounts of energy, and create hot patches around vents close to the furnace before the heating cycle stops.

When you talk about furnace size, you are not talking about the actual physical dimensions of the unit. Rather, the size of a furnace is determined by its heating output and the amount of heat it can provide.

The output of a furnace is often measured in British thermal units (BTU) per hour. A BTU is a unit of measurement for energy, particularly the amount of energy necessary to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Heat is now understood to be the same as energy. The joule (J) is the current SI unit for heat and energy; one BTU equals about 1055 J.

Furnace BTU

You need to remember, that “BTU/h” is sometimes abbreviated to just “BTU”. The modern unit of power for heating and cooling systems is the watt. 1000 BTU/h is approximately 293.1 W.

Some manufacturers have started to calculate furnace size in MBHs rather than BTUs. One MBH is 1000 BTU per hour, then you’re still using the same unit: 60 MBH is equal to 60000 BTU.

The general BTU per square foot heating rule of thumb varies from 30 BTU per square foot to 60 BTU per square foot based on your climate zone. That is a significant variation, with one furnace being twice as powerful as the other, so the size factors are explained here to help you in how to size a new furnace for a house.

A bigger furnace, such as one with an output of 120000 BTU per hour, will provide enough heat for a larger space. A smaller furnace will have a smaller BTU capacity, such as 40000 BTU per hour, and would be suitable for only a smaller pace.

Calculating BTU requirements for a house

Let’s start with this useful map of Furnace Size Calculator Canada. The climate becomes progressively colder from zone 1 to 3.

Find your location on the map. If you’re on or close the border between two zones, choose the higher number, the cooler zone.

Canada climate zones

Take the square footage of your home. If you don’t know it, you can look up the blueprint of the house, or measure rectangles within your home. Multiply the width by length for each rectangle and add them together.

It is not quite accurate, but nevertheless very useful for our purposes. While you shouldn’t use this furnace size calculator to make a final decision about furnace size, you can use it to get an idea of the size range to look at when you buy a new furnace. You can get a basic estimate using the square footage of your house.

The general rule of thumb is that you need between 30 and 60 BTU per square foot. Depending on your climate zone, you can determine how many BTU per square foot you need.

Furnace BTU sizing chart

Living in Aurora, Ontario (Zone 2), in a home which is 2000 square feet. The chart would tell that you probably need a 90000 BTU furnace.

This value is only a rough approximation to demonstrate how these previously mentioned factors can affect the furnace size you need to buy, how many BTUs needed to heat a house. There are several additional factors that can affect the final furnace sizing calculation.

Professional furnace sizing

The best way to ensure your furnace is the right size for your home is to get an evaluation from a professional HVAC expert at Novel Care.

We need to inform people living in Stouffville on how to prepare for and avoid house fires. Heating systems are one of the leading causes of house fires, second only to kitchen equipment, according to data, therefore it is essential to be aware of furnace safety. Fortunately, there are some simple precautions you can take to minimize the possibility of a fire and keep your house and family safe and prepared in case of emergencies.

Furnace Fire Causes

Furnaces may get very hot, especially if they are used constantly during the wintertime. Because of the heat, you should keep the area surrounding your furnace free of clutter. The majority of Stouffville fire deaths are the consequence of flammable objects being left close to a heat source, generally the gas furnace. To reduce the risk of fire, you should leave at least three feet of space around your furnace free.

You need to look for discoloration or heat on the walls surrounding the furnace. If you discover any of these indications, contact Novel Care to have a professional heating specialist inspect your gas furnace.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness in Stouffville

As a byproduct of burning fuel for heating, your gas furnace may emit potentially hazardous gases. Some of these gases, such as carbon monoxide, are odourless, making them extremely dangerous. When typical fuel-burning appliances and equipment which burns natural gas, oil, wood, propane, and kerosene do not get enough oxygen to burn, this odourless gas is generated as a byproduct of insufficient combustion. Furnaces, though, are intended to safely exhaust harmful gases outdoors. To minimize carbon monoxide buildup in the home, make sure that your vents are clean of any clogs or dirt.

Carbon Monoxide, known by its chemical fourmula of CO, is a toxic gas that cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. CO is also known as the “silent killer.”

Carbon monoxide may accumulate in the house, particularly in enclosed areas, and this can have devastating consequences on humans and all living creatures.

CO has warning signs by how it affects humans. CO poisoning causes flu-like symptoms, such as:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • burning eyes
  • confusion
  • disorientation
  • drowsiness

CO poisoning affects your body’s ability to absorb oxygen. It can cause brain damage and death in extreme situations. The elderly, children, and those suffering from heart or respiratory problems may experience the affects sooner than the others. Even low quantities of CO gas might be extremely dangerous.

The best solution to protect yourself and your family in Stouffville against carbon monoxide poisoning is to eradicate it at the source. When it comes to CO safety, here is a checklist to take into account.

  • Have fuel-burning appliances installed by a professional Novel Care technician with over 35 years of experience.
  • Have all your fuel-burning appliances and vents are inspected annually.
  • Keep chimneys clear of small animals, leaves, and other debris to ensure proper ventilation.
  • Ensure your furnace is inspected for adequate ventilation.
  • Install a working carbon monoxide alarm near all sleeping areas in your home.
  • Remember to test your CO alarms once a month by pushing the test button on the unit.

Small Animals Can Cause a Furnace Fire

As leaves and tiny animals might sneak into your vents, it’s a good idea to make it a routine practice to check them frequently. If you have a cat, you may have seen it resting on the heating vent that delivers air to your ducted furnace. It may not be cold enough in the home or outside yet, but cats enjoy resting on furnace vents. Cats, like any other animal, are always looking for ways to feel relaxed. You may believe that your cat is intelligent enough to avoid every risk in your home on their own, but it may or may not recognize real danger. There are a number of HVAC hazards in your basement, including your gas furnace. Sitting near or on the furnace should not be encouraged.

We need to remind Richmond Hill residents how we can prepare for and prevent home fires. Since statistics show that heating systems are one of the main causes of home fires, second only to cooking equipment, it is important to be aware of furnace safety. Fortunately, there are some basic tips that can help to reduce the risk of fire and keep your home and family safe and prepared for emergencies.

Furnace Fire Causes

Furnaces can become hot, especially when they are in constant use during winter. This heat means that you should keep the area around your furnace clear. Most of fire deaths in Richond Hill are the result of combustible materials being left near a heat source, usually a furnace. Ideally, there should be at least a three foot area of space around your furnace to reduce the risk of fire.

You should also check the walls near the furnace to check for discoloration or heat. If you notice any of these signs in the vicinity, call a professional heating expert from Novel Care to check for gas furnace dangers.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness in Richmond Hill

As a side effect of burning fuel for heat, your furnace will produce potentially dangerous fumes. Some of these fumes, including carbon monoxide can be odorless, which makes them especially dangerous. This odourless gas is produced as a byproduct of combustion when common fuel-burning appliances and equipment that use natural gas, oil, wood, propane and kerosene, don’t get enough air to burn up completely. Fortunately, furnaces are designed to safely vent these fumes outside. Therefore, to avoid carbon monoxide build up in house, it is important to ensure that your vents are clear of any obstructions or debris.

Carbon Monoxide, also known as CO, is a poisonous gas that you can’t see, smell or taste. CO is often referred to as the “silent killer”.

Carbon monoxide at home can build up, especially in a confined room or space – and this can lead to toxic effects on humans and pets.

CO has warning signs by how it affects humans. CO poisoning causes flu-like symptoms, including:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • burning eyes
  • confusion
  • disorientation
  • drowsiness

CO poisoning makes it difficult for your body to absorb oxygen. In severe cases it can cause brain damage and death. The elderly, children and people with heart or respiratory issues may feel the effects sooner than others. Even small amounts of CO gas can be dangerous.

The best way to ensure that you and your family in Richmond Hill are not exposed to carbon monoxide is to eliminate this poisonous gas at the source. Here is a list to follow when it comes to CO safety.

Leaves and small animals can get into your vents, so it is a good idea to establish a routine of checking your vents are clear. If you’re a cat owner you may noticed your cat sitting on the heating vent that distributes air for your forced air furnace. It might not even be that cold in the house or outside yet, but cats love sitting on furnace registers. Cats like any other animal are constantly searching for comfort. You might think that your cat is smart enough to avoid all danger in your home on their own, but it may or may not understand where danger lies. In your basement there are a number of HVAC dangers including your furnace. Sitting near or on the furnace shouldn’t be something you encourage. There is always chance they get too close to the pilot light or brush up against a hot tube or duct. Cat and small animals pose a furnace fire hazard.

In the interest of saving a few bucks, you might be considering which things around the house can be put off until a later date. That’s a normal part of being a homeowner. Juggling when to redo the kitchen, paint the hallway, or finish the deck in the backyard – if you’re lucky enough to have a backyard of course – is natural when things are expensive in Toronto and the GTA. One thing you shouldn’t put off too long though is maintenance for your home’s heating system. Toronto heating maintenance from Novel Care is the solution.

Why Toronto Heating Maintenance Is Necessary

While some of you out there reading this might be quite handy around the house, even you should explore your HVAC supplies Toronto wide for new options annually. You see, even if you diligently change the air filter on your furnace every few months, keep vents clear, or flush your boiler once a year, that’s still not really enough to ward off major problems from eventually building up. The truth is, a professional can take a close look at your home’s system to see any budding issues and make recommendations before they become real expensive problems.

Some of the benefits to booking Toronto heating maintenance include:

Safety

And undiagnosed furnace could be producing a real threat if the air filters are blocked or there is a serious leak. Boilers have been known to burst if left unchecked. All it takes is a trained professional to have a look every year or two in order to foresee major issues like this and help you avoid any problems.

Using less energy

This is a big one since it has a few benefits. First, a well-running furnace, boiler, or heat pump pulls in less energy to operate properly, which in turn keeps your home’s carbon footprint smaller. The earth will love you for it, but not as much as your wallet will. In fact, an efficient heating system keeps energy bills lower on average too, so you’ll actually save a bit each month!

As homeowners, we all appreciate saving a bit more money whenever we can. From finding a great deal online when shopping to something as simple as keeping energy consumption a bit lower, every little bit helps. Here, we’ll look at a few simple things you should consider if you’re looking for better heating performance from your furnace, boiler, or heat pump.

DIY Tips To Ensure Better Heating From Your Home’s System

Starting with the basics, always be sure to have all windows closed when running your heating. While this may sound obvious, we’re all human and make mistakes, so just take a quick walk around your home to ensure all windows are fully closed.

With the obvious stuff out of the way, let’s begin. Below are some of the ways to ensure better heating performance from your furnace, boiler, or heat pump.

Changing air filters

Just like you need air to perform at your best, so too does your heating system. Be sure to change air filters every few months throughout your home. Furnace filters should be changed just as often. Of course, it all depends on you. If you have a lot of pets or allergies, you may want to change these filters more frequently to ensure your home’s air is as clean as possible.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance should be booked at least every 2 years. Again this is based on your home and the age of the heating system. However, you’ll want to make sure to book this as it can help you get the most out of your system. A well-kept furnace, boiler, or heat pump can last decades.

Blockages

This one’s easy. Just keep all vents clear to ensure your system isn’t heating the bottom of a couch or table. If you have a radiator, please don’t keep anything too close to it. It not only prevents heat from reaching the whole room, it actually can be a fire hazard.

Insulation & air leaks

If you want better heating, you need to make sure your home is properly insulated. Just like wanting to keep windows closed, you can’t expect your home’s heating to compensate for poor insulation or even air leakages due to poor weatherstripping or improper installation of doors and windows. Best bet here is to consult an expert who can help identify any issues and make recommendations.

Better Heating Performance Is Possible With Novel Care

Owning a home in Toronto and the GTA is a big responsibility – and not a cheap one. That’s why it’s so important to get the most out of every appliance and system in your home. To help, Novel Care has a few Toronto furnace tips you can use to keep your home’s heating system running smooth all winter.

3 Toronto Furnace Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Adjust Your Thermostat Accordingly

While we all love to stay toasty warm in the winter, we have to be careful not to stress out our furnace by expecting it to heat our home at a moment’s notice. Too many homeowners will simply turn on the furnace as if it were a light switch and set it to their desired temperature. Instead, why not work your way up gradually.

Start by setting your thermostat at a couple degrees lower than you normally would. This allows your furnace to heat up your home and take a break more often – preventing it from working too hard when it doesn’t really have to and helping with overall longevity.

Check And Replace Filters

We all need air to breathe and your furnace does too. Don’t forget to check and replace any filters to allow for proper airflow. If your furnace isn’t getting enough air, it has to work harder, which can shorten its lifespan.

Keep Vents Clear

When it comes to Toronto furnace tips, this one is the easiest. In about 10 minutes you can take a walk around your home to identify where all your vents are located. Then simply make sure nothing is blocking them. If a vent is blocked by some furniture, move it.

The reason you don’t want any vents to be blocked is that if warm air isn’t making it through, the furnace will run more often than it should to try and heat the home. Keeping vents clear allows for even distribution of warm air throughout your home.

My name is Andy and I just wanted to share my experience regarding the importance of furnace maintenance. My furnace has lasted 20 years (going on 21), and the one before that lasted 18 years – which is why Novel Care asked me to let other homeowners know some of the tips and tricks I use.

Furnace Maintenance Isn’t The Only Thing To Help Your Furnace Last

In my experience, there are plenty of little things you can do to help your furnace from working overtime on those cold winter days. For starters, I always try to keep my curtains open during the day for windows that get the most direct sunlight. At night, I close them to prevent any heat from escaping. Sure it seems like a small effort, but I’ve got a few more tricks up my sleeve to help – like keeping my filters fresh and clean every 3 months. Replacing air filters over vents in your home puts much less stress on your furnace and air conditioner. They both rely on clear airways to work efficiently.

Another small tip is to keep all vents clear. If your couch or side table is sitting over a vent, that adds more stress on your system. Same goes for a build up of dust or debris. I tend to make sure I have someone clean out my ducts once a year just to be sure there aren’t any blockages slowing things down.

Ceiling fans have also helped with air circulation in my home – even in the winter. But most importantly, I book annual furnace maintenance with Novel Care. It’s a small price to pay when combined with a few other basic things I do to make sure my furnace lasts. Plus, their team is always on time, efficient, and a pleasure to deal with. I always recommend them to anyone looking for a good experience you can count on.

New homeowners don’t always know all the furnace tips, the little ways to help a home’s heating and cooling system perform efficiently and last longer. It’s really not that difficult, and we’ve put together a small list of things any homeowner in Toronto and the GTA can do to help get more from their furnace this winter.

7 Non-Technical Ways To Help Your Furnace

Ceiling fans

One of the simplest furnace tips of all would be to make use of your ceiling fan – if you have one. If you don’t, you might want to consider it since they help with circulating the air in your home. This has been a cost-effective way of controlling a home’s temperature for quite some time now.

Keep vents/filters clear

Moving right along, let’s jump into a furnace tip that most people don’t think about – airflow. Keeping vents clear and open is a great way to ensure your furnace doesn’t work too hard to heat your home in the winter. And don’t forget that a clean air filter can work wonders too, as furnaces pull air from your home in order to heat it. No air, and your furnace will be working overtime trying to compensate – which is bad news.

Programmable thermostat

Most homes tend to have this furnace tip in place already. If you don’t, you should put this on the list of things to upgrade. Smart thermostats don’t have to be expensive either, as a basic one can still be programmed to adjust the level of heat in your home when you’re at work or out for the day. This not only helps your furnace, it saves you more each month on energy bills.

Annual Furnace maintenance

Having a qualified professional take a look at your furnace once every year or two is always a good investment. They can usually identify or even deter problems and help your furnace last longer. Yes, some people feel comfortable performing their own maintenance, but we never recommend that without previous training or experience. The last thing you’d want to do is void the warranty or even put yourself in danger to save a few bucks.

Check for air leaks

Drafty windows and doors are a sure way to put pressure on your furnace. Installing weather stripping around any minor drafts is a great furnace tip to help keep warm air from your home from escaping.

Bake/cook more at home

Ever notice that most people don’t like to cook in the summer? Using the stove or oven can raise the heat indoors, which is a great furnace tip in the winter. Don’t be afraid to cook or bake a bit more often to help warm your home – your furnace will thank you.

Curtains

Keeping curtains closed at night is a great way to help prevent heat from escaping. During the day, keep them open to let light in if you have a lot of natural light of course.

Top Furnace Questions

Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cool Air Instead of Hot?

We receive this one a lot, and the answer is often quite simple. If you feel cool air from your vents, go over to the thermostat. There’s a good chance you have your fan set to ON, instead of AUTO. The AUTO feature is great for offsetting this issue. If that isn’t solving the issue though, you may want to call in a professional to diagnose a potentially serious problem.

Do I Really Need Furnace Maintenance?

Yes. Think of maintenance as helping your furnace last longer. A well maintained unit can last as many as 20+ years before it needs to be replaced. While that’s not always a guarantee, never booking maintenance is a sure way to shorten the life span of your furnace dramatically.

Can I Handle Furnace Maintenance Myself?

It is never recommended that a novice perform any type of in-depth maintenance on a complex system like a furnace. While some videos may guide you through the process, jumping into something like this could leave you with a bigger problem on your hands down the line.

Is There Anything I Can Do To Help My Furnace Work More Efficiently?

Of course. There are actually several things homeowners can do to improve efficiency around the house. Using ceiling fans, keeping vents clear, changing air filters every few months, as well as sealing any air leaks around doors and windows are all successful ways to lighten the stress on your furnace.

How Often Should My Furnace Be Replaced?

If your furnace is more than 15 years old, you should be preparing for a replacement. Plan ahead, and check in with the person who performs your maintenance to get a better idea of how long before you’ll need to make the change. While some furnaces last 20 years, that isn’t always the case, so plan ahead.

The unofficial end of summer in Toronto is here. The Canadian National Exhibition is on right now in downtown Toronto, the weather is becoming more and more unpredictable. You probably aren’t thinking about your furnace yet because it’s not cold enough, but fall and winter will sneak up quicker than you think, and with September right around the corner you’re about to get a lot busier. That’s why there’s no better time to take care of your fall furnace maintenance.

Late August and September are the best times for fall furnace maintenance because professional furnace maintenance and repair companies like Novel Care can easily schedule your fall furnace maintenance well in advance of the first snowfall.

Don’t Skip Fall Furnace Maintenance

Trust us, fall furnace maintenance is important. An annual check-up for your furnace is one sure way to keep your furnace running properly well into it’s twilight years. Over time your furnace and system can wear down and some components can even break down if they’re not properly maintained. Some of these components can be easily replaced, but there are times where carbon monoxide leaks can be a real threat. This is one of the worst things that can happen in your home. Carbon monoxide is one of the most dangerous gases that can be released into your home if your furnace isn’t properly maintained.

Your furnace will typically last between 15 and 20 years, and with proper maintenance and repairs as necessary it should operate reliably for the majority of those years. As all furnaces age their efficiency drops, so if you have an older furnace it’s important to talk to your HVAC technician when it makes sense to replace it for a new high-efficiency furnace.

Furnace Replacement

When the time comes that fall furnace maintenance doesn’t make sense anymore it’s time to find a high efficiency replacement. High-efficiency furnaces have the ability to save you a lot of money each month and over the life of your furnace they will pay or their extra up-front cost. In the long-term and new efficient furnace makes the most sense, but talk to your Novel Care technician for the best advice about which model and size are best for your home.

So, you’ve heard it before, but seriously…winter is coming!

With that in mind, it’s time to start thinking about your furnace and whether it’s ready for the long cold days and nights of winter.

If you have a furnace that’s less than 4 or 5 years old then you probably don’t have too much to worry about in terms of whether or not your furnace will keep you and your family warm all winter.

Local Furnace Services: Furnace Maintenance

On the other hand if your furnace is older than 5 years than it’s likely something you need to put some thought into. Keeping your furnace in good working order is important to do every year. We recommend having a professional furnace repair technician do a maintenance service checkup on your furnace once a year. As your furnace ages, you might run into some instances where it needs a little more attention.

Our Novel Care furnace technicians have been working in Toronto and the rest of the GTA for over 35 years. During that time they’ve performed furnace maintenance on every type of furnace you can think of. That means all the popular and reliable brands as well as all the lesser known brands that may have been purchased because they were a great deal at the time. We always recommend installing reliable furnace brands because in our experience they pay off in the long-term. They require far fewer repairs and their useful life is also much longer.

Local Furnace Services: Furnace Repairs

We briefly discussed your aging furnace and that it might need a little more attention as it gets older. There’s really no avoiding it and eventually you may need furnace repairs. Regular maintenance can really mitigate the extent and frequency of repairs as your furnace ages, so avoiding repairs starts with maintenance.

Contact Novel Care right away if you suspect something is wrong with your furnace. Waiting until a small issue becomes a big problem only means that it will cost more to fix. Additionally, it might be tempting to hope a noise goes away or a squeaking stops on its own, but realistically that’s not going to happen. Calling a professional as early as possible is important.

September, October and November are typically the best months of the year to save money on utility bills because there isn’t a need for a furnace or air conditioner. If you get too hot you can open windows and take off clothes, or even turn on fans. If you get too cold a sweater or blanket isn’t usually too far away. Luckily, you can expect to get one of the lowest energy bills of the entire year, if you play your cards right, and by cards we mean paying attention to your energy usage.

However, this month temperatures are dipping a little low and mid November might be the time to fire up your furnace. If you have had an HVAC technician already perform annual maintenance on your furnace then you likely won’t run into any problems, but if you haven’t then there’s no time like the present. There are some basic things that need to be done in order to make sure it’s ready for an entire winter season.

Turning Your Furnace On For The First Time

Your furnace has been sitting all winter long, it collects dust just like everything else and as a result needs a good cleaning, along with your vents and duct system. When you run your furnace for the first time you might smell something that resembled burning, but don’t worry that just all the accumulated dust being toasted. If you find that the smell isn’t dissipating after an hour then it might be something more than dust and you should call an experienced HVAC technician at Novel Care.

There are a few other precautions you should take if you haven’t had a furnace tune-up and you’re starting the heating season on your own:

  • Change the filter – Your filter needs to be changed whenever its clogged, which can be up to once every few months depending on how dusty your house is. remember the blower also blows air through the filter during the summer while air conditioning your home.
  • Clear the furnace area – If your furnace is located in a storage area of your home it’s important to make sure nothing has been piled against or too close to your furnace. Anything that’s flammable can catch fire.
  • Test your thermostat – Even if your thermostat worked reliably in cooling mode, it’s worth double-checking its accuracy in heating mode. Take a digital thermometer from room to room to make sure your home is heating accurately and evenly.

Winter Is Coming, Are You Ready?

In addition to preparing your furnace there are a few things you can do to ensure your home is ready for winter. They are easier than you might think, take a look:

  • Check and replace weather-stripping – You should have some form of weather-stripping on every window and exterior door. But time and the elements can take a toll, and weather-stripping may peel or become cracked. Wherever you find damaged weather-stripping, replace it before it turns into a chilly draft.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned – If you have a functional wood-burning fireplace that you intend to use, complete this service before building your first fire.
  • Trim your trees – Pay particular attention to tree limbs that could fall onto power lines or through windows if they were to suddenly break. If you live in an area that experiences ice storms, the added weight of ice buildup could very well bring those limbs down.
  • Prepare an emergency kit – Winter storms can develop suddenly, and severe storms could leave you without power and heat for hours or days. Store at least a three-day supply of fresh water and non-perishable food, as well as flashlights, batteries, a radio, blankets and medical supplies. If you have a generator, keep it maintained and ready.
  • Test your carbon monoxide detectors – Cracked furnace heat exchangers are among the most common causes of carbon monoxide leaks. During heating season, make sure you have at least one carbon monoxide detector for each floor of your home, and test those detectors monthly.

Getting your home ready for winter is essential to keeping it warm and running as efficiently as possible. Fall might not technically be over, but Mother Nature doesn’t care what our calendar says. If it’s cold out you need to be ready. For professional furnace maintenance, furnace repair or furnace installation contact an HVAC technician from Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

5. Lubricate & Clean the Blower Motor: Check your owner’s manual to see if your motor is the kind that needs lubricating or not. Not all blower motors need lubricating, so you can save yourself a lot of work if it doesn’t. If it does, turn off the power, open the cover and clean the caps covering the bearings. Then remove the caps and lubricate the bearings. If just reading this sounds like a lot of work to you, feel free to give one of our HVAC system technicians a call and we’ll take care of it.

6. Test the Igniter Switch: An older HVAC system might have a pilot light that needs relighting if it blows out or is off for maintenance. A newer HVAC system will have a furnace with an electronic igniter switch. If the igniter isn’t working, push the reset button. If that doesn’t do the trick, check your breaker. Still not working? Call a professional. The last thing you want to do is damage the igniter or the furnace.

7. Inspect the Chimney & Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because it has no smell or taste. Chimneys can house carbon buildup or even small animals, which can lead to a blockage and carbon monoxide in your home. A professional will inspect all the chimneys on your home to ensure that they’re safe. It’s also a good idea to routinely test or replace carbon monoxide detectors as they help protect you year round.

8. Replace The Filter And Nozzle, And Check the Tank Level of Oil Furnaces: Unlike gas-fired systems, oil units require oil filter changes, burner nozzle cleaning and a pretty thorough heat-exchanger brushing. This keeps your entire HVAC system including your oil furnace running efficiently. Since oil doesn’t burn as cleanly as gas things can get fairly dirty and inefficient if left unattended.

Overall, there are quite a few important things that you should be taking care of at least once a year if you have an HVAC system that you take care of yourself. If home maintenance like this isn’t your thing, that’s what we’re here for. Contact us at Novel Care Toronto. We’ll give you a free quote and let you know just how quickly we can be there: 416-921-0000.

School is back in session; the leaves are starting to fall, and pumpkins are popping up in festive displays all over the place. It won’t be long until you switch your HVAC system over from cooling to heating, if you haven’t already. Essentially, winter is coming, and you need to ensure your HVAC system is ready. Here are some things that you need to ensure are working properly, configured properly and ready to keep your family warm.

Checking Your HVAC System

1. Turn On the Thermostat: The first thing most people do is to switch the thermostat over to heating. Setting the temperature, a couple of degrees warmer this time of year doesn’t mean that your system will turn on all the time, but it’ll keep your home warm if the temperature dips slightly. If you don’t hear the furnace kick in, take the cover off your thermostat, and ensure that all the wiring is properly attached and snug. Additionally, make sure that there is power to your thermostat as well as your furnace. If it’s still not working, you could check the furnace fan, blower or heat pump, but at this point it’s probably best to call a professional HVAC system technician.

2. Change The Air Filters: You may or may not already know this, but your furnace has air filters that clean the air that’s being blown around your house. Most of the time there’s only 1 filter that resides in your furnace, but some HVAC systems have filters in each of the vents throughout your home. Whether you have a single filter in your HVAC system or not they should all be changed every few months. You may not think your home is dusty until you take a look at these filters. We promise once you change them, you’ll never forget to do it again…yuck! Changing these filters means you’ll not only have cleaner air, but also, it’ll help prolong the life of your furnace.

3. Cover The AC Condenser: Unless your HVAC system has a heat pump (in which case, don’t cover it at all because it runs all year), cover the condenser to protect it from falling icicles. You don’t have to completely wrap up your air conditioning systems’ condenser but protecting the top of it from anything large falling on it can save you on repair costs when spring time comes. Don’t wrap it in a moisture-trapping plastic tarp.

4. Clean The Heat Exchanger: The heat exchanger in your HVAC system should be cleaned out properly at least once a year by a professional, like an HVAC technician from Novel Care. This needs to be done while the unit is disabled to avoid injury. Our technicians will look for cracks that can lead to dangerous CO (carbon monoxide) leaks.

Anyone who lives in Toronto and the GTA knows that this city can get expensive fast. Between the fluctuating price of gas to the uncertainty of the housing market, it can be tough to live the life you want – but there’s always a way. This is especially true of your furnace. While you may have signs to look out for – such as age – the chances of you knowing exactly when your furnace will give out aren’t in your favour. So what do you do when you need Toronto furnace repairs?

Searching For Toronto Furnace Repairs

In a city like Toronto and the GTA, there is no shortage of people available to “help” whenever you need it. Moving? Go online. Need some landscaping? Go online. Looking for a used car and want to skip the dealership… you get the idea. The answer for just about anything is to go on your phone, tablet, or home computer and start looking for whatever your heart desires. The only trouble is, you don’t want to pay a fortune and you don’t want to get ripped off.

This is where some research comes into play. Typing “cheap Toronto furnace repairs near me” might yield some results, but the cheapest option available could be a guy who fixed a furnace that one time for his friend. Take a second and look for the right signs before turning over your hard-earned money to a stranger. Rest assured, the last thing you want is to gamble on your furnace. Saving a few bucks now could result in you needing a new furnace well before its time has come.

Dependable Toronto Furnace Repairs

Our hand-selected team has performed countless repairs, maintenance calls, and installations of boilers, furnaces, and air conditioners alike, so you should feel confident to call us for your Toronto furnace repairs. We’re even available to contact 24/7 at 416-921-0000, because we know sometimes emergencies happen. If your furnace stops working, we’ll be there to answer the call and make sure you get assistance quick.

Instead of searching through an endless sea of “professionals“ offering Toronto furnace repairs, make sure you choose Novel Care, and save yourself from the search.

As a homeowner in Toronto and the GTA, it’s important to manage your spending when it comes to your new investment. Finding the best deal on appliances and fixtures is one thing, but cutting corners usually leads to more expensive problems down the line. While Toronto Furnace Sales might advertise a cheap price, you should always choose the furnace that best suits your home – rather than saving a few bucks upfront.

Toronto Furnace Sales Aren’t Always About Price

Searching online for the best priced furnace is always a smart decision before you buy. However, searching for the “best Toronto furnace sales” won’t help narrow down your options very much. There are all types of models from a variety of brands promising their unit is the best. To know for sure, you’ll need a bit of guidance. A professional installer can provide you with some insights on which models might work for you.

Cost might be an issue when trying to stay on budget, but it’s important to at least know where you stand. Cheaper isn’t always the way to go. You’ll need to think about how many people are in your home, how well-insulated it is, and how big it is to properly select a furnace that will get the job done right. If you have a smaller space to heat then maybe a unit with less power would be exactly what the doctor ordered for your home. On the other hand, the more space you have to heat, as well as how good your insulation is, might require you to have something stronger than your typical output. Energy efficiency is always important in keeping your monthly bills under control, but that’s not always front and centre when people search for Toronto furnace sales.

Novel Care Offers More Than Just Toronto Furnace Sales

After 30 years of serving Toronto and the GTA, Novel Care has been able to deliver a comprehensive experience that leaves customers informed, satisfied, and feeling secure. Our team focuses on customer service, so your questions and concerns are always addressed. We’ve built our reputation on efficiently providing quality repairs, maintenance, and installations whenever you need us. That’s why we’re available to take your call 24/7. Call us at 416-921-0000 and we’ll gladly help you find the furnace that’s right for you, so you can skip the Toronto furnace sales search.

If you’re living in Toronto and the GTA, you already know things can get expensive fast. Whether it’s the cost of gas going up, your favourite restaurant raising its prices, or a few things that need upgrading around your home, saving money isn’t easy. In fact, it’s pretty stressful. To make matters worse, unexpected repairs can drain your savings in the blink of an eye. That’ why many homeowners turn to a furnace protection plan to ensure they’re covered.

Since no one really thinks about their furnace until something breaks, it’s important to plan ahead. Having a Furnace Protection Plan in place reduces the risk of large expensive repairs.

What Is A Furnace Protection Plan?

The simple explanation is that it’s a security blanket. If your furnace stops working in the middle of winter or needs certain repairs due to wear and tear, a Furnace Protection Plan will handle it. No charge or expensive bill to deal with. It’s easy and gives you a bit more peace of mind knowing your furnace is protected. And so is your wallet.

Is it worth it?

If you’re weighing your options about whether or not you should invest in a Furnace Protection Plan, here are some things to consider. After all, you should never just buy something without actually thinking about all the pros and cons.

Pros

  • Less stress
  • Costs less than replacements

A Furnace Protection Plan is a very good way to cover all your bases, so to speak. First off, the cost of repairs, labour, and any replacement parts are completely included. That can make a big difference depending on when you need repairs. After all, winter is a time of spending money around the holidays and playing things a bit more frugal in the New Year. Most people don’t have the money to pay for repairs that pop up, but winter is the time furnaces are used more often and can break down. A Furnace Protection Plan can save you the headache of dealing with the cost of repairs.

Cons

  • Is this something I need?
  • My furnace is in good shape

For those of you living in Toronto and the GTA, you know the value in keeping as much of your money as possible. Things are expensive and no one has money to just buy what they don’t need. With that said, it can be hard to imagine a scenario where investing in a Furnace Protection Plan is a good idea – especially if you’ve never had any trouble with your furnace. While your luck may be good right now, do you really want to leave your home’s heating to chance? When a furnace goes down, it’s more of a hassle than you think if you’re not protected. Finding a quality professional to make repairs is hard enough, but finding the money to pay them is an unwanted challenge. Plus you have to find this fairly fast to avoid pipes freezing in winter too. Remember, luck eventually runs out, so it pays to think ahead and stay protected with a Furnace Protection Plan.

Where Can I Get A Furnace Protection Plan?

In Toronto and the GTA you’ll find a bunch of self-claimed professionals willing to offer you help. Finding the best, and avoiding the rest, isn’t easy. With 30 years of experience though, Novel Care is a name you can trust. Our experts are dedicated to doing quality work efficiently. That’s why we’re confident in our ability to offer Furnace Protection Plans, which includes a 22-point annual inspection at no additional charge. By performing maintenance once a year, we’ll be able to see the condition of your furnace, and make suggestions before things go wrong.

From pilot burners to thermostats, we’ve seen and handled it all. Rest assured, a Furnace Protection Plan with Novel Care is something keeps you covered all year. Contact us for more information at 416-921-0000 today! We’ll take care of your furnace, so you stay warm all winter, no matter what.

With plenty of winter still ahead, you’ll want something to help ensure you have peace of mind as the temperature continues to drop. No matter how good your furnace may be, it never hurts to have a backup plan if things go sideways unexpectedly. After all, when you know an expense is coming, it’s easier to plan for. On the other hand, surprises can leave you feeling stressed and anxious. Good thing there are companies like Novel Care offering a solution to this in the form of Furnace Protection Plan.

Is a Furnace Protection Plan a Good Investment?

Some people might be thinking twice about paying a yearly fee for this service. That’s good! You should never just blindly buy into something without giving it some thought first. This isn’t a pack of gum you’re buying. It requires you to weigh the pros and cons.

Furnace Protection: Pros

  • Peace of mind
  • Eliminate surprise repair costs

The pros are pretty obvious while the cons are a bit more about testing your luck. Consider this. Having a Furnace Protection Plan keeps you covered in the event something goes wrong. That means if it’s the middle of winter and your furnace can’t keep up with the added stress of being used more often, someone can assess the situation and repair it without any charge to you. Think about that for a second. When’s the last time you got a surprise that cost more than it should? It probably made you feel pretty overwhelmed. Nothing’s worse than always thinking about “what if this breaks down” or “how much will this cost to fix?”. These can be stressors in your life you just don’t need. Especially with your furnace. Your furnace should be something that is always ready to go when you NEED it. Not sometimes. Not only on weekends. 24/7 at your request. That’s what a Furnace Protection Plan can help with.

Furnace Protection Plan: Cons

  • Do I need it?
  • I haven’t had any problems so far

Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about the cons. Some cynics might be thinking “my furnace works pretty well, thank you very much” or “why would I pay for something that isn’t broken?”. Both are 100% valid. Investing in Furnace Protection isn’t something you might actually need every year you pay for it. You might not even need it at all for the first couple years. A Furnace Protection Plan is there to shield you from those times you DO need it. Those times when things go wrong and a repairman is looking at you to pay a bill you don’t have the money for around the holidays, or even in the new year. Those expensive bills that just hit you like a ton of bricks. Sometimes it’s good to be prepared and avoid moments like that. Especially when you have a family to think about. Not only do you want them to stay warm against the harsh Toronto winter, but you also want that peace of mind for yourself to know everything is covered, always.

So, What is a Furnace Protection Plan Anyway?

A Furnace Protection Plan is something that would help protect you from unexpected repairs that may occur during those winter months. While other companies may be different, Novel Care offers full coverage of repairs, labour, and any parts that need replacing. Plus, our experts will perform a free 22-point inspection once a year to make sure we stay ahead of any troubles that might be coming up.

After providing furnace installation, maintenance, and repair services for over 30 years, we’re confident in recommending a Furnace Protection Plan to our customers. Leave the stress of keeping your furnace in working order to the professionals. We’ve handled thermostat troubles, pilot burner problems, furnace replacements and much more. Full list of everything we cover in our Furnace Protection Plan or just contact us at 416-921-0000. Our experts are always available to help out, so plan ahead and stay cozy this season.

There’s a lot more to a furnace inspection than just turning on your furnace and changing the furnace filter. There are actually quite a few steps involved, which are important to ensure your furnace is running cleanly and efficiently all winter long. The worst case scenario of not properly taking care of your furnace is that it will stop running while you’re away on your winter vacation, and the pipes in your house freezes. Frozen pipes typically burst, and replacing a bunch of burst pipes is incredibly expensive.

The easiest way to prevent this from happening is to keep your furnace running well all winter long. A furnace inspection is like an oil change to a car. You don’t absolutely have to do it, but you know it’ll keep your car running well and reduce the amount you have to spend on repairs in the future.

So what should you expect when you schedule a furnace inspection? Here are some of the typical services that should be performed during a furnace inspection.

  • The blower motor, wheel and housing will all be inspected and properly cleaned.
  • Some older furnaces need lubrication to the blower motor, and when doing so the belt will be checked for fraying.
  • The combustion blower will be inspected for obstructions, lint and other debris, and cleaned.
  • Your furnace will be inspected thoroughly for gas leaks.
  • Condensate lines, pan and drain will be inspected.
  • The evaporator coil will be check for proper functioning.
  • The burner will be inspected and cleaned if applicable.
  • All safety controls and the ignition will be thoroughly inspected.
  • The heat exchanger and heat elements will be inspected if applicable.
  • Where applicable, the flue will be inspected for holes and corrosion.
  • All electrical components and connections will be inspected.
  • The air filter will be replaced.
  • The duct system will be inspected for holes and cleanliness.
  • The startup system will be inspected for errors.
  • Unusual sounds and smells will be investigated.
  • Air conditioners and heat pumps will be inspected while the HVAC system is running.
  • The temperature will be measured and checked.

These and many additional things will be looked at depending on the brand and model of your furnace. Inspections differ between oil and gas furnaces, but an experienced technician should be able to take care of both types of furnace inspections.

For more information about your next furnace inspection or to schedule an appointment contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

The unofficial end of summer is September, which is why we’re calling it fall furnace maintenance now. Don’t worry, we’re not declaring the end of summer yet, we’re just trying to help you prepare for the impending winter. Late August and September are the best times for fall furnace maintenance because professional furnace maintenance and repair companies like Novel Care can easily schedule your fall furnace maintenance well in advance of the first snowfall.

The Importance of Fall Furnace Maintenance

Without an annual furnace check-up your furnace might not last as long as you want it to. Your system can wear itself down and different components can easily break down if they’re not properly maintained. One of the worst things that can happen is your furnace can accidentally release deadly carbon monoxide into your home, which is also why our technicians always ask if there’s a carbon monoxide detector in the house.

The typical life of a furnace is around 20 years, and with proper maintenance and repairs your furnace should last that long if not longer. As all furnaces age their efficiency drops, so if you have an older furnace it’s important to talk to your HVAC technician when it makes sense to replace it for a new high-efficiency furnace.

High-efficiency furnace have the ability to save you a lot of money each month and over the life of your furnace. Replacing your furnace is a matter of functionality and what your household budget can absorb at the time. In the long-term and new efficient furnace makes the most sense, but talk to your Novel Care technician for the best advice.

Novel Care has been providing fall furnace maintenance, and installing and repairing furnace for over 30 years in Toronto, York Region and the rest of the GTA. For more information or to schedule an appointment contact us: 416-921-0000.
