Most people have heard of ductless heating and cooling systems, and they have probably seen the small, indoor devices installed high on walls in homes, restaurants or office buildings. But what do you really know about these systems?

1. They Offer Highly Flexible Solutions

Whereas traditional heat pumps and central air conditioning systems force cooled and heated air through ducts, ductless heating and cooling systems deliver air directly into different zones. They are comprised of a small outdoor unit and one or more indoor units that require nothing more than mounting capabilities and access to electricity.

Sometimes referred to as split systems, mini-split systems, multi-split systems, or split-ductless systems, ductless heating and cooling offer home and business owners a cost-effective way to replace inefficient window air conditioning units, space heaters, and electric baseboard heaters. They can be installed in home additions, new construction, condominiums, and apartments, or to improve temperature control in specific rooms. Ductless systems can even be fit for buildings that currently use ducted forced-air systems.

2. Ductless Heating and Cooling Systems Save You Money

One of the biggest reasons why homeowners switch to ductless heating and cooling is overall cost savings. In recent years, utility costs across the country have skyrocketed. When a home’s temperature depends upon an inefficient system, monthly bills can quickly climb out of control. Ductless heating and air conditioning systems operate on less power – they are smaller than traditional forced-air systems, and because the temperature-controlled air is delivered directly into a room, there is no loss of efficiency. Multi-split systems also allow homeowners to create “zones” in their homes, which means they no longer have to cool or heat rooms that aren’t occupied.

In addition to saving money on utilities, homeowners may also be eligible for tax credits or utility rebates for the year they install a ductless air conditioning and heating system. There are many programs at the federal, provincial and local levels that allow homeowners and businesses to take advantage of these additional savings.

3. They Improve Indoor Air Quality – Happy Breathing!

Often times, the quality of indoor air can actually be lower than the quality of outdoor air. With traditional HVAC systems, air ducts must be professionally cleaned on a regular basis, and even after cleaning, dust and allergens are left behind. Ductless air conditioning and heating systems, on the other hand, offer multi-stage filtration that can drastically reduce dust, bacteria, pollen, allergens and other particulates in the air.

4. Ductless Heating and Cooling Systems Are Quick and Easy to Install

Installing a traditional, ducted system can take several weeks and disrupts daily activities in the home. Ductless systems are far less invasive to install, and depending upon the number of indoor and outdoor units required, they can be up and running in as little as one day.

Mini-split systems run on small pipes that require a mere three-inch hole. That means homeowners don’t have to worry about rebuilding walls or ceilings around ductwork and there is no loss of precious square footage.

5. Ductless Air Conditioning Lowers Your Carbon Footprint

The small size of a ductless cooling system and its zoning capabilities allows for greater energy efficiency. Ductless heating and air conditioning systems follow ENERGY STAR guidelines, which means they are far more energy-efficient than the minimum standards set forth by the U.S. federal government. Improved efficiency saves money, of course, but it also helps reduce your total carbon output.

Additionally, ductless systems take advantage of advances in chemistry to reduce effects on the environment. Ductless systems use a refrigerant called R410A, which is known for its zero ozone depletion potential. This means the system will have less impact on the environment throughout its lifecycle.

Ductless air conditioning and heating systems are energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and completely customizable. They offer homeowners the ability to cool and heat specific zones of their home to the exact temperature they desire, providing consistent and exceptional year-round comfort.

If you’ve got a ductless air conditioner installed in your home then you might already know the benefits to having one. If you know very little about ductless air conditioners, but know that you need one for your space because it’s the best option then you’ve come to the right place. Ductless air conditioning systems circulate cool air-conditioned air throughout your home or space without and ductwork needed. Ductless air conditioning systems are an affordable alternative to central heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC ) systems, which need a network of ducts to move air. Ductless air conditioning systems are typically seen as more efficient and easier to maintain than window air conditioners, and high-efficient, affordable and reliable alternatives to central air conditioners.

If you live in an old house that has no ducts, or a newer house that does not use forced air heat (and does not need ducts), it can be a big expense to install a central air conditioning system. Installing central air conditioning doesn’t just mean installing the condenser unit outside, it also means installing a network of ducts in your home. This means lots of heavy construction and ripping walls apart. If the cost and hassle aren’t something you’re interested in then ductless air conditioners are the best solution.

5 Benefits of Ductless Air Conditioning Systems

  1. Easy Installation: Ductless air conditioning systems are very easy to install. In fact they can be installed in a fraction of the time it takes to install a central air conditioning system. Typically, it would take a few HVAC technicians to install a central air conditioning system over the course of a week or two. A ductless air conditioning system or a ductless mini split system can be installed in a single day.
  2. Small: Ductless air conditioning systems don’t take up much space. They consist of an internal air handling unit that seamlessly integrates with your home decor, and an external condenser unit that sites outside of your home. The two components are connected by numerous wires and tubes to create your ductless air conditioning system. Both units take up very little space, and much less space than a full duct system.
  3. Easy Operation: Ductless air conditioners are as easy to operate as flat screen televisions. They typically come with a remote control that’s very easy to use. They allow you to control the temperature, the direction of the airflow, as well as numerous other settings. Overall, any ductless air conditioning system you have installed should be very easy to use.
  4. Affordable: Ductless air conditioning systems don’t use as much electricity to operate as central air conditioners. It’s actually significantly less, which save you money every month on your hydro bills. On top of that they operate specifically when people are in their vicinity. So, you aren’t cooling places in your home that are empty. You can turn on and off all of your ductless air conditioners individually, so they only cool the places you want. By comparison, central air conditioners operate throughout your entire home all the time, so there is no way to efficiently target specific areas of your home.
  5. Shhhhhh: Ductless air conditioning systems are very quiet. Some indoor air handling units are so quiet you can’t even hear them operating, and outdoor condenser units are also very quiet for the most part. Overall, ductless air conditioning systems are designed to ensure that your home environment is a comfortable sanctuary.

The red-hot Toronto housing market has been in the news a lot lately with first time buyers, investors and many other people looking to get in on the action. One of our customers, a new investor, recently bought a new house and in the midst of renovating it in order to flip it he realized that financially it didn’t make sense to install central air conditioning, but ductless installation made the most sense.

Ductless Installation For A House Flip

Doug called us and explained his situation. He told us that he was in the middle of his renovation. He wanted to save the existing boiler in the home, because it wasn’t that old. He wanted to save space by not adding duct work, and go with a big open concept design. He’s very handy and has a good understanding of heating and cooling options, so he asked us for a recommendation for a high-efficiency low-cost option for ductless installation.

One of our Novel Care technicians came to Doug’s work site once he had the drywall up and everything painted. We surveyed the layout and made recommendations for a ductless installation based on the size of the space. There are numerous options for great ductless products from companies like Panasonic and Daikin that all fell within his budget, so we helped Doug narrow it down to the best option for the main floor, and then two more units for the upper floor ductless installation. One for the master bedroom and en-suite and another for the hallway, which would easily provide cooling for the two other bedrooms and the bathroom.

The Ease Of Ductless Installation

We scheduled a ductless installation date that worked with Doug’s construction schedule, so our technician wouldn’t interrupt or slow down his work. We understand that timelines are important when it comes to flipping a house, and each additional day of construction can mean added costs. Our technician was in and out of Doug’s construction site within a few days, and shortly after his house was up for sale featuring a new ductless installation that worked seamlessly with his renovation style and décor.

Leave The Upgrades To A Toronto Ductless Air Company

When it comes to older homes, central air conditioning isn’t always an affordable option. Installation is run through an entire home, making it quite invasive and costly. This is why ductless air conditioning is a much more reasonable and cost-effective choice.

Providing spot cooling to areas of your home, ductless can help control the temperature of whichever room it’s in. Installation is much simpler too. It consists of a unit indoors, a compressor outdoors, and tubing to connect the two. This drastically lowers the amount of work it takes, which helps keep the cost of installation much more reasonable.

Don’t forget, ductless air conditioning has many benefits to an older home, but this way of cooling your home depends on its size and how well insulated it is. The bigger the home, the more units you might need to keep it cool when the mercury rises on a hot day. Also, if insulation is poor, you might end up seeing that reflected on your next energy bill – no matter which type of cooling unit you have. Most important of all, you should always have the right Toronto ductless air company handling all your installation and maintenance needs. This not only ensures you get a quality installation but also helps with liability too.

Ductless air conditioner units are also great choices for rooms and additions where extending ductwork isn’t feasible. Overall, ductless air conditioner units are an excellent choice for a number of situations and are a great way to keep energy bills low and indoor comfort high.

Ductless Air Conditioner Main Advantages

  • Size: They’re very small in size and as a result can be incorporated into just about any space and existing decor.
  • Flexibility: They can be used to suit small areas as well as large, and can be customized for spot cooling or entire floor cooling. Multiple units can be networked in order to further enhance your cooling efforts and provide flexibility to lots of different people.
  • Zone Cooling: Cooling different zones is an excellent way to keep specific areas different temperatures, and ensure that different people can adjust the cooling in their spaces to suit their preferences. This is done through the use of multiple thermostats.
  • Easy Installation: Installing a ductless air conditioner is easy and can be done in a single day. They consist of 2 main components, an exterior condenser, and an interior air handler. These units are connected by drilling a hole through an exterior wall and running a pipe with all the necessary components. Typically, these units should be no further than 50 feet away from each other, but exceptions can certainly be made to accommodate unique scenarios.
  • No Ductwork: Ductless air conditioner units don’t have any ductwork. That means there’s no energy loss through the ducts, there is no need for new construction to install new ducts. Duct systems can be responsible for up to 30% of a central air conditioner’s energy consumption through inefficiency.
  • Remote Controls: Ductless air conditioner systems are easier to operate than televisions, which ensures that anyone can properly configure and operate them.

Overall, ductless air conditioners are an excellent choice for spaces that have existing ductwork and spaces that don’t have any. They’re the perfect addition to any home or office environment, providing cool fresh air that increases the comfort of your space. You might also experience other benefits like increased efficiency and happiness due to your space being much more comfortable than it was before you installed ductless air conditioning.

As technology moves forward so does the intelligence of air conditioning products. Smart thermostats, monitoring, and other components are becoming the standard. Following ductless air installation, these pieces of technology ensure the efficiency and proper functionality of a unit. They have the ability to modify heating and cooling cycles depending on settings or their environment, and in turn, save you money.

Smart Thermostats

Smarter thermostats that can be part of your ductless AC installation package have lots of capabilities. They can be connected to smartphones, tablets, and computers using BlueTooth and wi-fi settings. This allows users to easily and accurately control their units, even while they’re not home.

Ductless Air Installation & Technology

Ductless mini-split air conditioners have come a long way since early units, and are now leading the pack in terms of energy efficiency. Ductless mini-split systems are set apart because they have a compressor that can connect to multiple indoor air handlers. These air handlers can be located in many different areas of the home and don’t require ductwork or other construction. Each ductless mini split installation comes with its own thermostat so specifying temperature throughout your home is easy. Cooling only the rooms you’re using also ensures great efficiency and saves you money.

Air Purifying

Poor indoor air quality can lead to lots of health issues and the last thing you want to do is expose your family to poor air quality. New ductless technology incorporates air-purifying into the mix. Now you’re also getting cleaner air in addition to cooler air. This eliminates the need to also purchase air purifying equipment.

Ductless air conditioning is an excellent cooling option in the summer and a great heating option in the winter. Ductless air conditioning systems are ideal for homes that don’t have existing duct systems while providing very quiet and efficient air conditioning.

Ductless air conditioning installation is also a very affordable option when compared to the thought of installing ductwork in your home. Apart from the weeks and even months of construction, you’ll have to endure you’ll also have to pay for the equipment, materials, and labour involved in installing ductwork in your old home.

Existing Ductless Air Conditioning

So, you’ve chosen ductless air conditioning installation and have had it running for a number of years now. Any of our Novel Care HVAC technicians will tell you that you’ve made an excellent choice.

One thing that’s important to understand about your ductless air system is that it needs regular maintenance just like any other air conditioning system. As a homeowner, there are 3 easy things you can do to ensure that your ductless air conditioning system runs well all year round, especially when you need it most.

  1. Ductless Air Filter: Ensuring that the air filter in your ductless air conditioner is always clean is one of the most important maintenance tasks you can do. The air filter ensures that the air that’s being brought in through the intake is clean, which flows through easily when it’s clean. A dirty filter will cause your system to work harder than it needs to, thereby reducing efficiency and lowering the effectiveness. Your ductless air conditioner air filter should be cleaned or replaced at least once per month.
  2. Clean The Exterior: It might not seem like a big deal, but cleaning the outside of your air conditioner is important. Gently wiping it with a damp cloth to remove the dirt and dust ensures that it won’t be sucked inside the unit, and also removes the possibility of impeding or damaging any mechanical or moving parts.
  3. Clean The Pipes: During peak usage, it’s important to keep the pipes between the air conditioner and the compressor clean. This ensures that there is good airflow between the two units, so efficiency and functionality aren’t impacted.

Overall, it’s important to perform regular maintenance on your ductless air conditioners. These simple tasks are an easy way to keep it running smoothly and efficiently.

Temperatures in Toronto are finally beginning to level out and it looks like Spring is here to stay. Before you know it the heat of summer will be bearing down on us and you may wonder “why isn’t my air conditioner working?” Hopefully, most of us don’t wait until a heatwave hits to ask this question, but if you do there are a few simple reasons that might make it true.

With proper maintenance and care your air conditioner should run well effectively throughout the summer, but not every air conditioner issue is completely avoidable. One of the most common questions we get every spring when people turn their air conditioners on for the first time is Why isn’t my air conditioner working? Here are a few reasons why it might not be working the way it should be.

Check Your Thermostat

First of all, the batteries in your thermostat need to be changed at least once a year. There will typically always be enough juice in them to ensure the digital display is on, but your thermostat also needs to have enough power to send an activation signal to your furnace and air conditioner. If the batteries are dying, they might not have enough power to get that signal to your air conditioning unit.

If your air conditioner still isn’t turning on, then check the temperature settings to ensure that they haven’t been changed. Other family members might have adjusted the temperature to suit their preferences, and as a result, it might be warmer than you’re accustomed to.

Damage to Ductwork

If you have a central air conditioner, then your duct system is an essential part of it. Cracked, bent or ductwork with holes in it might be letting air escape into the walls of your home or other exposed areas in your basement. This can drastically reduce the amount of air that’s actually making it to your vents and out into your home.

It’s also a good idea to inspect your vents for blockages. If you had recent construction activities in your home and materials have fallen into vents or you have smaller family members who are prone to putting things down the vents then you might have a blockage that’s limiting airflow.

Free Your Condenser

The condenser is the large part of your air conditioning system that resides outside of your home. If this unit gets blocked by plants, trees, bushes, garbage, chairs, leaves or any other debris its efficiency can be affected. A dirty or blocked condenser won’t be able to receive enough air to release heat from its coils. When a condenser is obstructed, it can shut down or turn on and off repeatedly, which is known as short cycling. Keeping your condenser clean and clear of debris is not only important to keep it running but essential to its efficiency.

So, Why Isn’t My Air Conditioner Working?

There are numerous reasons for air conditioner problems, some more technical than others. If you try these solutions and still don’t have any luck, give Novel Care a call and one of our technicians will be able to assist you. Keep your family cool this summer, contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.
