Avoiding Furnace Repairs Resulting From Renovations

avoiding furnace repairs

If you’re a homeowner you understand how expensive it can be to own and operate a home. It’s important to do everything you can to ensure that your home and all of its parts last for many years to come, especially expensive things like your furnace. One thing many people don’t realize is that while they’re trying to improve their home with renovations they can be doing damage to their furnace at the same time. Luckily, avoiding furnace repairs that can be caused by renovations isn’t as hard as you might think.

Avoiding Furnace Repairs is Easy

The major culprit that can cause furnace damage when renovating is dust. Drywall dust and dust from other cut materials can be very fine and infiltrate your furnace and lead to permanent damage. Think of your furnace as a pair of lungs and what breathing in and out all that dust would be like. It makes it work harder and ultimately can cause damage.

One of the best ways in avoiding furnace repairs when renovating is to close off all the registers on the floor and in the area where you’re renovating. This prevents dust from entering your duct system and lingering in your ductwork.

Turning off your HVAC system and blocking your intake is also advisable so duct can be drawn into your furnace and duct system, clog up your furnace and spread throughout your home.

When you have cutting to do, try not to do it in your home. Instead choose a place in the yard or on a deck where the dust can disperse outdoors. It’s also a good idea to try to vacuum as much as possible during your renovation, so you can combat the dust as much as possible so it doesn’t infiltrate your HVAC system.

Finally, change your furnace filter. We say this all the time in our blogs, but changing your furnace filter, especially during a renovation, is very important. Your furnace filter should capture most of the dust that’s floating throughout your home, but this means it can be clogged up quickly during a renovation. Checking it regularly to ensure proper airflow is important, and overall changing the air filter is a fairly inexpensive thing to do.
